Election turnout

There were no big lines wrapped around corners in the Mat-Su Tuesday morning where turnout at the polls appeared to be steady, but not the stampede it has been in some heavily populated cities in the Lower 48.

At the normally deserted Fishhook fire station on Wasilla-Fishhook Road near Hatcher Pass, what passed for a relative crush of people was there was enough of a line that one voter standing right next to the door looked irked when an incoming voter had to brush past her to open it. In downtown Palmer, at the borough building, a voter reported a wait of 20 minutes before being able to cast her ballot around 9 a.m.

Many may have decided to cast votes early. One woman reported her husband waited two hours Monday at the borough government building in downtown Palmer to cast his early ballot.

The most famous Valley voter marked her ballot early in downtown Wasilla. Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin flew in before sunrise to cast her vote before flying off to Arizona to eventually join running mate John McCain.
