I voted!I voted!

Get out and vote, nightlifers, then, depending on today's events, celebrate or commiserate with these spirited cocktails. They're not party-specific, so don't try to make a donkey or elephant of yourself by pegging someone on their choice of drink. These are suggestions to celebrate and simply enjoy the fact that we live in a nation where we can actively participate in our civic duty -- and even, for the first time I can recall, not mind waiting in long lines to do so.

American Flag shooter

1/3 grenadine
1/3 crème de cacao
1/3 Blue Curacao

Pour in grenadine. Next layer the crème de cacao and the Blue Curacao using a bar spoon. Looks red, white and blue and tastes like a chocolate-covered cherry.

American Pie

1 tsp grenadine
2 ounces vodka
1/3 sweet and sour
2/3 7-Up
1/2 ounce Blue Curacao

Pour grenadine in glass. Add straw and ice carefully. Fill 1/3 of glass with sweet and sour. Add vodka. Fill glass almost to the rim with 7-Up. Add Blue Curacao. Do not stir.

P.C. (Politically Correct) Martini
From The Willard Inter-Continental in Washington, D.C.

1 ounce vodka
1/2 ounce dry vermouth

Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass.

Red, White & Blue Martini
From the Town & Country Lounge, Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Blend:
4 ounces ice
1 ounce vodka
2 ounces pineapple Juice
3 tablespoonsCoco Lopez coconut milk
1 ounce half and half

Pour half tablespoon almond flavored liqueur so that it sinks to the bottom of a cocktail glass. Lightly pour half tablespoon Blue Curacao along rim of glass, so that it floats on top to create red, white and blue layers.

Historical Campaign Cocktails

Ward Eight

1.5 ounces rye whiskey
3/4 ounce lemon juice
3/4 ounce fresh squeezed orange juice
scant teaspoon grenadine
