We are starting by posting the Alaska State Troopers' daily logs, our own crime-related stories and other relevant items as we come across them. The Daily News encourages community engagement and discussion of issues of crime and criminal justice. Comments are not edited and will be posted immediately. A tribal police officer in Quinhagak suffered serious injuries after being attacked by a suicidal person Saturday, troopers said. The officer is expected to recover. The dispatch is below.

Location: Big Lake
Case number: 08-91252
Type: MVA-I
Text: On 11-02-08 at approximately 1839 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to the report of a motor vehicle collision at the intersection
of Big Lake Road at Hollywood Road. Investigation on scene revealed
Seth L. Brower, age 33, of Houston, was driving his 2004 Ford Excursion
north on Big Lake Road, accompanied by two passengers when their vehicle
collided with a 1990 Ford Pickup driven by David K. Winters, age 43, of
Big Lake traveling west from Hollywood Road. Further investigation
revealed Winters' vehicle failed to stop for the stop sign on Hollywood
and continued into the intersection, into the path of Brower's vehicle.
All occupants in Brower's vehicle reported wearing seatbelts and
reported no injuries. Winters was extricated from his vehicle by fire
department personnel and was transported by Lifeguard helicopter to
Providence Hospital in Anchorage where he was being treated for
undetermined injuries. Damages to Brower's vehicle are estimated at
$10,000.00. Winters' vehicle is a total loss.

Type: DUI
Text: On 11/02/08 at approximately 2347 hours the AST South Central
DUI Enforcement Team stopped a vehicle near the intersection of Knik
Goose Bay Rd. and Settlers Bay Dr. in Wasilla for erratic driving after
it was reported as a REDDI. The operator was identified as Fred Cogin,
age 58, of Wasilla. Cogin was found to be operating the vehicle under
the influence of alcohol and was arrested for DUI. Cogin was remanded
to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility where he was held on a $5,000.00 bail.

Type: Domestic Violence Assault 4, Criminal Mischief 4, Interfering W/
Report of Domestic Violence Crime.
Text: On 11/03/2008 at approximately 0206 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a residence located on Hollywood Rd near Wasilla to the
report of potential disturbance. Investigation determined David A.
Anderson II age 26 of Wasilla had assaulted a family member after
kicking in the door of the residence. Anderson disabled the telephone in
an attempt to interfere with the report of a crime of domestic violence.
Anderson was arrested and remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial; no bail.

Text: On 11/03/2008 at approximately 0735 hours, Alaska State Troopers
received a call from an assisted living home on N. Lagoon Drive in
Wasilla, regarding of an expected home death. Investigation determined
that Phyllis Compton, age 92 of Wasilla, passed away due to natural
causes at 0720 hours. Next of kin was notified, Comfort One is on file
and no foul play is expected. The SME was notified and released the
body to the family.

Type: Expected Home Death
Text: On 11-3-08, at approximately 1257 hours, Alaska State Troopers
were notified of an expected home death. Investigation revealed that
Robert D. Hartley, age 85, of Palmer, was pronounced dead at 1213 hours
on 11-3-08, at his residence on North Hartley Drive in Palmer. The
State Medical Examiner's office and Life Alaska were notified. Comfort
One paperwork was on file. Next of kin were present at the time of
death. No foul play is suspected. Kehl's Mortuary will be making the
arrangements for the family.

Type: Minor Possession of Alcohol
Text: On 11-3-2008 at approximately 1210 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to Colony Middle School for a report of a teenager having
alcohol on school property. Investigation revealed that a 13 year old
female student had brought alcohol onto school property in a water
bottle. The female was issued a summons to appear in court for minor in
possession and released to her parents.

Type: MVC-D
Text: On 11-03-08 at approximately 1446 hours, AST responded to a MVC at
the intersection of Abby Boulevard and Brome Avenue. Investigation
revealed Karina Barenz, age 42 of Wasilla, was traveling W/B on Brome
Avenue and turning N/B onto Abbey Boulevard, in a green Honda Accord,
when Forrest Kostek, age 22 of Palmer, turned E/B onto Brome Avenue from
Abbey Boulevard, in a yellow 2002 school bus, and hit the front end of
Barenz' vehicle with the rear wheels of the school bus. No injuries were
reported at the scene. Drivers of each vehicle were wearing seatbelts.
Damage to Barenz' vehicle is estimated at $2,000.00 and the damage to
the school bus is estimated at $1,000.00. Kostek was cited for Failure
to Exercise Due Care to Avoid a Collision.

Text: On 11/03/2008 at approximately 1524 hours, Alaska State Troopers
arrested Nancy Murphy, age 39 of Wasilla. Murphy was known to have an
outstanding arrest warrant for failure to appear with an original charge
of Driving With a Suspended License. Murphy was located at her
residence off of Mulchatna Road in Wasilla. Murphy was arrested and
transported to Mat-Su Pre-Trial where she was held on $500.00 bail.

Text: On 10/23/2008 at approximately 0200 hours, the False Pass VPSO
found a small black bag in front of the False Pass City Office, which

Type: Assault in the Fourth Degree
Text: On 10-31-08 at approximately 0410 hours, Alaska State Troopers and
the VPSO in Newhalen received a report of an assault in Newhalen. The
investigation revealed the two parties involved were both intoxicated
and combative with one another. The two individuals were separated and
the DAO in Dillingham was contacted via telephone. The case will be
forwarded to the DAO for disposition.

Type: Assault IV x 2
Text: On 10/31/08 at 0930 hours, the Alaska State Troopers in
Dillingham received a report from 17-year-old M.A. of Manokotak that she
had been assaulted by her boyfriend, 23-year-old Brandon Kusegta of
Manokotak. Investigation revealed that on 10/30/08 at 1730 hours, M.W.,
who is six months pregnant had been assaulted two different times by
Kusegta. On 11/02/08, Kusegta was located at the Dillingham airport and
arrested. Kusegta was charged with two counts of assault IV on M.W.
During arraignments on 11/02/08, Kusegta plead guilty to two counts of
Assault IV on M.W. Sentencing will be on 11/05/08.

Type: Harassment (telephone) / Domestic Violence
Text: On 11-1-08 at approximately 1800 hours a 25 year old male
resident of Kodiak reported to AST Kodiak his 23 year old, recently
estranged wife, was harassing him by making numerous phone calls at
inconvenient hours, and sending him threatening text messages.
Investigation revealed the woman made 93 phone calls over a period of
several hours. Many of the calls were made between the hours of
approximately midnight and 5:30 am. The women admitted to placing the
calls and sending the text messages. Harassment is a Class B
misdemeanor and is a crime of Domestic Violence. The woman was charged
with one count of Harassment.

Type: MVC-ATV
Text: On 10-23-08 at 1700 hours, Information was received from the
Napakiak Police Department that an accident had occurred involving an
ATV - four wheeler. Preliminary investigation revealed that two ATV's
were racing in the village when a 17-year old female lost control of her
ATV, the ATV tipped and threw a 17-year old passenger onto the ground.
The 17-year old passenger hit her head on the ground causing her to lose
consciousness. She was medivaced to Bethel via Aero-Med and later
transported to ANMC in Anchorage. She is reported to have suffered from
a closed head injury and is recovering after surgery. There is no
indication she had been wearing a helmet nor was alcohol involved.
Investigation continues.

Text: On 11-2-08 at 0230 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received a
report of an intoxicated person in Gambell. Subsequent investigation
led to the arrest of Dawny James, 21 of Gambell, for Driving Under the
Influence and Manufacturing Alcohol.

Text: On 10-23-08 at 1550 hours, Shishmaref VPSO Huntington reported to
the Alaska State Troopers that he had received a report of an
altercation between two people. VPSO Huntington responded and
investigation determined that a two individuals were involved in a
mutual fight. The Nome District Attorney was contacted and neither
person was arrested. After the case is completed it will be forwarded
to the District Attorney for a decision on whether charges will be
filed.

Location: Cold Bay
Case Number: 08-91348
Type: MVC - Injury
Text: On 11/01/08 at 1120 hours, the Alaska State Troopers in Dillingham
received a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian accident in Cold Bay.
Investigation revealed that on 10/31/08 at 2315 hours, 23-year-old Brain
Heaps of Cold Bay was driving his 1985 Chevrolet pickup bearing the
license plate 7826CX northbound on Krukoff Road, which does not have
street lighting. As Krukoff rounded a curve in the roadway, he observed
46-year-old Dailey Schaack of Cold Bay walking northbound on the roadway
in the lane of travel. Heaps attempted to stop his truck, but it struck
Schaack. Local EMTs responded to the scene and based on their
observations of Schaack, it appear alcohol was a contributing factor in
the collision. There was no indication that Heaps had been drinking
prior to the collision. Schaack was subsequently evacuated to ANMC in
Anchorage for non life threatening injuries. The estimated damage to
Heaps pickup was $100. No citations were issued.

Type: Criminal Mischief - Third Degree (Non-DV), MCA
Text: On 11/3/08, at approximately 0915 hours, Alaska State Troopers in
Kotzebue received a report of criminal mischief in the village of
Selawik. Investigation revealed that a 17 year old male in the village
was intoxicated and had broken out three windows at a residence he was
visiting. The damage to the residence is estimated to be approximately
$1,500. Village Police Officers are assisting with the investigation,
but have been unable to locate the suspect. Investigation is
continuing.

Text: On Monday, November 3, 2008, the Alaska State Troopers received a
report from Peter Andrews, 58 yoa of Mountain Village, that someone had
removed a .22 cal stainless steel long rifle from his black Ford truck
while it was parked near his residence in Mountain Village. The loss is

Type: Assault on Peace Officer
Text: On November 1, 2008 Bethel AST received information that Tribal
Police Officer Ben Foster suffered serious injuries after being
assaulted by a suicidal subject. Once the subject was secured, TPO
Foster was seen by local health aides prior to be transported to
Bethel's Yukon-Kuskokwim Correctional Center for his injuries. TPO
Foster is in good condition and is expected to fully recover. The
District Attorney's Office has been consulted and the investigation is
continuing.

Location: Moose Pass
Case number: 08-91239
Type: Motor Vehicle Collision with Injuries
Text: On 11/2/08, at 1711 hours, Troopers responded to mile 32 of the
Seward Highway for a report of a single vehicle collision. An
investigaiton showed that Amy Kilshaw, 27 of Seward, was driving north
bound on the Seward Highway when she lost control coming out of a curve.
Kilshaw's vehicle slid into the oncoming lane and went into the ditch
where it collided with an embankment. Kilshaw was wearing a seat belt
and sustained non-life threatening injuries. Alcohol was not a factor
in the collision.

Type: Improper Identification of Gear
Text: On 10-29-08, Alaska Wildlife Troopers summonsed Dennis P. Donohoe,
age 53 of Chandler Arizona, for Improper Identification of Gear after it
was discovered that Donohoe, skipper and permit holder aboard the FV
Bering Hunter, was commercial fishing for Red King Crab while using gear
with an illegible ADF&G number. Arraignment is scheduled for the
Unalaska District Court on 11/26/08 at 1330 hours.

Type: Arrest Warrant Served
Text: On 10-30-08 at 1515 hours, a WAANT investigator and a Togiak
Police officer arrested Paul Markoff, age 26 of Togiak at an airline
terminal in Dillingham. An arrest warrant had been issued for Markoff
charging him with Stalking in the First Degree and Assault in the Third
Degree. Markoff was lodged at the Dillingham jail with bail set at
$5,000.00.

Type: Importation of Alcohol to a Local Option Area
Text: On 10-31-08, WAANT investigators intercepted a package being
shipped to a Togiak resident from out of state. The package was found
to contain four 1.75 liter bottles of distilled spirits. Suspects have
been identified and investigation continues. Togiak is a local option
community that has voted to ban the importation, possession and sale of
alcoholic beverages.

Text: On 11-1-08 at 1544 hours a WAANT investigator and a Dillingham
Police Officer arrested Jean Schlosser Jr. age 22 of Dillingham. An
arrest warrant had been issued charging Schlosser with Assault in the
Second Degree with a firearm. Schlosser was lodged at the Dillingham
jail with bail set at $10,000.00.

Type: Promoting Contraband 2nd Degree.
Text: On 11/2/08 Nome ABADE was notified by AMCC staff that two inmates
had consumed homebrew and were being transported to the hospital.
Investigation revealed that inmate Frank R. Johnson, age 29, and inmate
Elliott M. Eakon, Jr., age 29, were intoxicated and in possession of
homebrew. Charges on both will be forwarded to the Nome DAO.
