Flag with a bit of history donated to Big Lake library

Julie Busch, with the Big Lake library, gave the MatSu View this rundown on a recent big event at the library.

Rep. Mark Neuman presented a 49-Star State Flag to the Big Lake Library Advocates, their board president Julie Busch, and the Big Lake librarian Jo Cassidy, on Oct. 20.

Rep. John Coghill donated 49-star flags to libraries in Alaska as a way to celebrate Alaska's 50 years of Statehood. The flag is one of thousands purchased by JC Penny during original statehood ceremonies to pass out to it's customers to celebrate statehood. The left over flags were then given to the Boy Scouts across the state to raise money. The flag's were then sold to a gift shop in Juneau by a Scout leader leaving the State years later and were recovered recently and purchased by Rep. Coghill who then donated them to select library's across the state.
