From Mat-Su reporter Rindi White:

WASILLA - A Wasilla mayoral candidate who had said his ex-wife was responsible for $78,000 in back taxes he owes now says he misspoke.

Marty Metiva faces Wasilla attorney Verne Rupright in a runoff election Tuesday for the Wasilla mayor's seat.

Metiva told a Daily News reporter last week that his ex-wife had typically paid the couple's taxes. He said he believed she had paid them.

But today he said the "she" that he referred to was not Laura Myers, his ex-wife, but another woman who was helping him at the time.

"I have never blamed Laura Myers for this," Metiva said. "I may have misspoke, saying 'she' instead of 'they.'"

His clarification came after the previously unnamed ex-wife, Myers, said by phone this morning that she had nothing to do with Metiva's back taxes and resented being blamed for them.

The Alaska Recorder's Office lists two Internal Revenue Service tax liens in Metiva's name, one for $36,346 and a second for $42,531. Metiva said one represents back taxes owed and the second is for interest and penalties.

The liens stem from Metiva in early 2001 cashing out a retirement package he had paid into for 12 years with American Classic Voyages Co.
