Halloween Time
Don't boo-re your party guests this holiday with the same lame, lime-green punch you've always whipped up in five minutes. Create some creepy concoctions and put the "weeeee" back in Halloween, baby.
First tip: Buy black vodka. The brand called Blavod makes any mixed drink dark, dank and midnight-esque and is a great conversation starter. I mean, black vodka? Who would have thought?
More cocktail suggestions from cocktails.about.com are listed below, as well as a few other spooky spirits for those of you who feel like partying in "pookah" style (read my column and you'll understand).
Black Magic
2 ounces Blavod black vodka
½ ounce grenadine
Lemon-lime soda (do NOT use for lime punch)
Maraschino cherry for garnish (frozen fake eyeballs are optional garnishes)
Pour the vodka and grenadine into an ice-filled Collins glass. Fill with soda. Garnish with the cherry. Voila!
Bloody Eyeball Martini
This one is tres creepy...
2 ounces gin or vodka
1/2 ounce dry vermouth
1 olive "eyeball"
Place gin and vermouth in a cocktail shaker with ice. Gently shake and pour, straining the ice into a martini glass. Garnish with an olive "eyeball."
Preparing ice eyeballs: Get 1 radish and 1 pimiento-stuffed green olive. The eyeballs should be prepared a day before your plan on use them. Step 1: Peel radishes, leaving thin streaks of red skin to represent blood vessels. Step 2: Using the tip of a vegetable peeler or a small, knife, carefully scoop out a small hole in each radish, about the size of an olive. Step 3: Stuff a green olive, pimiento side out, in each hole. Step 4: Place 1 radish eyeball in each section of an empty ice cube tray. Pare the radishes down a bit to fit, if necessary. Fill the tray with water and freeze overnight
Brain Hemorrhage Shot
This is a great drink to serve on Halloween because, well, it looks nasty in the shot glass and creeps people out.
1 ounce peach schnapps
1 tsp. Bailey's Irish Cream
½ tsp grenadine
First, pour the peach schnapps. Then, slowly pour the Irish Crème. Do not mix! The Creme will clump and settle at the bottom of the schnapps. It's actually pretty tasty though, so tell your guests to trust you, and shout "bottoms up!"
Pumpkin Pie Shot
Pumpkins, Halloween, autumn… you get the idea.
1 part Bailey's Irish Cream
1 part Kahlua
½ part rum
cinnamon
Pumpkin Spice Martini
1 1/2 ounces rye whiskey
1 1/2 ounces Hiram Walker Pumpkin Spice
1/2 ounces triple sec
1/4 ounces anise liqueur
1 egg white
3 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters
grated nutmeg for garnish (optional)
Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously (to ensure the egg is properly mixed). Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Sprinkle grated nutmeg on top if desired
