The Alaska Aces' roster took a hit today, when 30-goal scorer Bo Cheesman underwent back surgery -- it will be a while until it's known how long he'll be out -- and defenseman Derick Martin was called up to the American Hockey League.
Cheesman's injury has to do with a disc, said Aces trainer Matt Seamon. Cheesman, who has had some back issues in the past, left an Aces exhibition game last week with a back injury and had not practiced since.
Martin, who enjoyed a brief call-up to Peoria of the AHL last season, was called up by the Providence Bruins. He attended Providence's training camp prior to the Aces' camp.
Martin's departure leaves the Aces with six defenseman, although rookie winger Erik Felde has extensive experience on the back line. The Aces have another defenseman, Bryan Miller, who has begun the season with Peoria.
