This blog is for those of you who would like to add more local foods to your diet, meet local farmers, learn new recipes based on seasonal eating and preserving the summer harvest. Food is political too, so here you can learn about and influence local and national agriculture issues, and participate in helping to rebuild the Alaska food system. May each of you chew happily and wisely.

Ellen Vande Visse, MS, was an organic market gardener from 1986-2006. She instructs and consults about sustainable agriculture, compost, compost tea, and eco-gardening through her own Good Earth Garden School and for UAA. Farmers' Market Update from Arctic Organics

Be sure to stock up on storage vegetables while the farmers still have the supply.

Frost has hit irrefutably this week, if not a little unpredictably. We scheduled today around allowing the field to thaw and recover for a couple of hours this morning as we had to yesterday. Nothing is lost so
far. We are harvesting crops as fast as possible in order not to lose them.

The carrots have thrived this year! We'll have them loose and in 5 and 10 pound bags, along with 20 pound bags of grade B carrots at a discount.

We'll also be bringing red, golden and Chioggia beets with greens, carrots, rutabagas, purple top turnips, daikon (Japanese giant white radish), green, savoy and red cabbage, broccoli sideshoots, white "snow
apple" turnips, kohlrabi, scallions, yellow and red onions, and radishes.

Greens include collards, mustard greens, red giant mustard, kale (Red Russian, Toscano, curly green and red), mizuna, watercress, rainbow chard, spinach, arugula, greens mix, tat soi, radicchio, and sorrel.

Herbs include basil (Genovese, lemon and anise), Italian and curly parsley, thyme, oregano, lovage, marjoram, savory, chervil and epazote.

We'll also have our apple trees hardy for successful growing in Alaska.

Locations
Anchorage Farmers Market through October 18th, located at 15th and Cordova in the Central Lutheran Church parking lot, open from 9:00 to 2:00 Saturdays.

Our farm stand is open every Friday evening
through October 17th 5:00pm-7:00pm here at Arctic Organics, 1305 N. Smith Road, just south of the Mt. View RV Park in Palmer, 746-1087.
