I Heart Beer Darts

Party peeps: Hold the phone, stop the text, put down the Red Bull. I have discovered the best drinking game ever. It's called Beer Darts, and it meets all four criteria for a drinking game: it's fun, challenging, dangerous and especially appropriate at a barbecue or house party.

First, you gather a group of people who aren't afraid to test their beery mettle. Second, you get a bunch of steel-tipped darts. The weenie ones won't puncture a beer can. Trust me. Third, you get a lot of beer – we went with Bud Light, but anything will work -- anything you don't mind drinking a lot of, that is.

Next, players sit in a circle. (Lawn chairs work best; sitting on the ground increases the danger of accidental darting.) Place your beer can approximately two feet in front of you. The rules are as follows:

1. If you puncture someone's beer can, they must drink from the hole to the level of the puncture. So if someone pokes your can at the top, you don't have to drink much. If the hole is poked at the bottom, you'll have to finish it.

2. If your beer can is hit with a dart twice, you must drink the entire contents and get another.

3. You can hit the person the can of the person next to you on either side, but you must realize you're starting a serious war that you can both win. It's just as easy for them to hit your can. The best option is to try for farther targets.

Just in case these rules are unclear, my friend Dave created a few AutoCAD diagrams to give you a visual idea, found at the top and bottom of this blog entry. Thanks Dave, way to use that engineering degree!

For more information and details, the Web site www.beerdarts.net lists rules and, apparently, the fact that there's an international competition. Athough I'm not sure if that only includes the guys who built the Web site and their Canadian friends. eHow.com also lists a how-to for the game.

If anyone has tried beer darts or plans to before the snow sets in, let me know how it goes. Although, the snow might be a perfect reason to play outside with beer and darts. Then you can share your stories of fun or foot pain.

And before you play, make sure there aren't any children around and that you monitor adults in the group who've had too many brews already. Steel-tipped darts mean safety is a priority, so be careful while you're being crafty. Cheers -- but safety first -- people.
