This is a new blog dedicated to the general topic of crime and crime prevention in Alaska. We are starting by posting the Alaska State Troopers' daily logs, our own crime-related stories and other relevant items as we come across them. The Daily News encourages community engagement and discussion of issues of crime and criminal justice. Comments are not edited and will be posted immediately. Sunday's trooper dispatches

The death of a man whose body washed up near docks on the southern tip of Baranof Island Friday afternoon does not appear to be suspicious, according to Alaska State Troopers. See the dispatch below.

Location: Juneau
Case Number: 08-74845
Type: Death Investigation
Text: On 09/06/08 at 1534 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to a
report of an inmate found deceased in his cell at the Lemon Creek
Correctional Center. The man was identified as 47 year old Myron L.
Medlin. Medlin had recently received a lengthy prison sentence for
several counts of sexual assault. At this time, no foul play is
suspected, however the body will be transported to the state's medical
examiner for an autopsy.

Location: Port Alexander

Case Number: 08-74482

Type: Unexpected Death

Text: On 9-5-08, at about 1400, Juneau AST received a report of an
unexpected death in the community of Port Alexander on the southern tip
of Baranof Island. During the subsequent investigation it was discovered
that Richard E. Maciel, age 51 of Port Alexander had been discovered in
the water near the docks in Port Alexander. He was pulled from the water
and CPR was initiated to no avail. The US Coast Guard arrived a short
time later and transported Maciel to Mount Edgecumbe hospital in Sitka
where he was pronounced dead. At no time did Maciel regain
consciousness. The investigation revealed that Maciel had recently been
suffering from chest pains and was encouraged to go to the hospital for
a check up. Maciel lived just out of the main village of Port Alexander
and commuted by skiff. No foul play is suspected in this death and the
state's medical examiner has released the body to his family.

Type: Warrant Arrest
Text: On 9/05/08 at approximately 2030 hours, Alaska State Troopers
arrested James Martin, age 21, of Copper Center on an outstanding felony
arrest warrant. The original charge for the warrant was for Assault in
the First degree involving Domestic Violence. Martin was remanded and
held at Glennallen Jail on a $50,000 bail.

Case number: 08-74869

Type: Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol

Text: On 09/06/2008, at approximately 1750 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a REDDI (Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately) report on
Knik Goose Bay Road near Horizon Drive in Wasilla. Troopers contacted
Andrew Gardipee (42) of Wasilla at his residence on Horizon Drive.
Investigation revealed Gardipee had been operating his vehicle under the
influence of alcohol. Gardipee was subsequently arrested for Driving
under the Influence of Alcohol. Gardipee was transported to Mat-Su
Pre-Trial where he was remanded and his bail was set at $1,000.00.

Case number: 08-74974
Type: DUI, MICS 5th Degree
Text: On 09/07/2008 at approximately 0059 hours the AST South Central
DUI Enforcement Team stopped a vehicle near mile 9 of Knik Goose Bay Rd.
in Wasilla for erratic driving. The driver of the vehicle was
identified as Lawrence D. Olson, age 54, of Clarks Point, Alaska. Olson
was found to be operating the vehicle while under the influence of
alcohol. Investigation found Olson to be in possession of more than one
ounce of marijuana. Olson was arrested and remanded to the Mat-Su
Pretrial facility on the charge of DUI and Misconduct Involving a
Controlled Substance 5th Degree. Olson was held on a $5,000.00 bail and
a court approved third party.

Type: DUI
Text: On 9/7/08 at approximately 0300 hours, the AST South-Central DUI
Enforcement Team contacted Kendra A. White, age 21, of Palmer, after the
vehicle she was driving was called in as a REDDI report on Hyer Rd. near
the Palmer-Wasilla Hwy. in Wasilla. Investigation revealed that White
was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol. White was
arrested for DUI and transported to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility where
she was held until sober.

Type: DUI / REFUSAL
Text: On 09-07-2008, at 0240 hours, the Alaska State Troopers arrested
Meaghan Murphy, age 39, of California for Driving Under the Influence
and Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test. Murphy was contacted as the
driver of a vehicle stopped by AST on the Parks Highway near Lucille
Street in Wasilla for a moving violation. Investigation revealed that
Murphy was driving while impaired and under the influence of alcohol.
Murphy was transported and remanded to the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility.
Bail was set to release Murphy to a court approved third party following
her arraignment.

Type: DUI
Text: On 9/7/08 at approximately 0445 hours, the AST South Central DUI
Enforcement Team stopped a vehicle on the Parks Hwy. near Church Rd., in
Wasilla, for erratic driving and an equipment violation. Investigation
revealed the driver, Michael G. Allmaras, age 45, of Big Lake, was
operating his motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
Allmaras was arrested for DUI and remanded to the Mat-Su Pretrial
Facility where he was held on a $2,500.00 bail.

Type: Vehicle Theft (x2)
Text: On 9-7-2008 at approximately 1105 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to report of an ATV theft from a residence on Monteclaire Ave
in Wasilla. Timathy Brown age 32 of Wasilla, reported that two of his
ATV's, a 2003 Red Honda Rancher and a 2004 Red Honda Rubicon where taken
from his residence. Investigation is continuing. Anyone having

Case number: 08-75029
Type: Criminal Mischief

Text: On 9/6/08 Aniak AST was contacted by William Koso the mayor of
Anvik who was reporting that the City of Anvik's front end loader had
been vandalized that night or early in the morning. The front window of
the loader had been broke out with a crow bar. Initial estimates place
the damage in excess of $500.00. The bar has been seized, and photos
taken of shoeprints near the loader.

Investigation continues.

Text: On 9/4/08 at approximately 0300 hours, Aaron Oseuk Jr. 44 yoa of
Gambell was arrested for a probation violation, after the investigation
revealed that he had consumed alcohol in violation of his probation.

Location: Nome/Stebbins

Case number: 08-75102

Type: Felony Alcohol Importation, License or Permit Required and Minor
in Possession of Alcohol.

Text: On 9/7/08 at about 1350 hours, Nome AST received an anonymous tip
that Allen Atchak, age 18 of Stebbins, was possibly importing alcohol.
Investigation revealed Atchak checked himself and two bags on a flight
for Stebbins. Atchak consented to a search of his two bags resulting in
the seizure of 25 bottles of distilled spirits. Atchak also said he was
selling the bottles for $100 each in Stebbins. Atchak was arrested for
Alcohol Importation, License or Permit Required, and Minor in Possession
of Alcohol and lodged at Anvil Mountain Correctional Center with no
bail.

Type: Assault in the second degree - domestic violence

Text: On 9-6-2008, at 2129 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to a
North Pole residence for a reported assault. Robert Lee David Thronsen,
age 21 of North Pole was subsequently arrested for Assault II.

Type: Negligent discharge of Firearm
Text: On 9/6/2008 at 2204 hrs, Fairbanks Troopers responded to a report
of a gunshot wound at the intersection of Jennifer Dr. and Murphy Dome
Rd. Investigation revealed that Anthony Andrew Terry age 53 of
Fairbanks was hunting in the area when he accidentally discharged a
round from his rifle striking Randall Lee Mihm age 59 of Fairbanks, in
the leg. Mihm was transported to the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where
he was reported to be in stable condition.

Type: Driving While Under the Influence/NVOL
Text: On 9/7/2008 at 0355 hours, AST contacted 28 yr old Enrique Casco
of North Pole, after his vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation.
Further investigation revealed that Casco was impaired and operating
without a valid O/L. Casco was arrested for DUI and NVOL before being
transported and remanded at the Fairbanks Correctional Center.

Case number: 08-74583

Type: NVOL

Text: On 9-5-08 at 1750 hours, AST stopped a Suzuki 600 motorcycle on
Tanana Loop Extension for equipment violations. Investigation revealed
that the operator, Aleksandr ZAREMBA, 24 of Delta Jct., did not possess
a valid motorcycle operator's endorsement on his operator's license. He
was issued a summons to appear charging him with one count of NVOL. He
pushed the motorcycle to his residence after being issued the summons.

Location: Delta Junction

Case number: 08-70611

Type: Arrest Warrant / Updated Press Release

Text: On 8-23-08 at approx. 2128 hours, AST received a report of
Domestic Violence in which the female victim had been threatened by the
suspect with a knife in an attempt to keep the victim from placing a
phone call to make the report. The victim was slightly injured during
the altercation. Some property, valued at less than $500.00, was
damaged. An arrest warrant will be requested for the arrest of the
suspect, who remains at large at the writing of this press release. An
update will be given after the suspect is apprehended. On 9-6-08, the
suspect, Luke W. STENBAK, 40 of Delta Jct., was arrested after several
unsuccessful attempts had been made by AST to apprehend him. STENBAK
was remanded to Fairbanks Correctional Center on $5000.00 cash only bail
with a Court Appointed 3rd Party Custodian, and was charged with one
count each of Assault 3rd Degree, Assault 4th Degree, Interference With
the Report of Domestic Violence, and Criminal Mischief 4th Degree, all
Domestic Violence related offenses.

Type: Driving in Violation of Instruction Permit
Text: On 9-7-08 Alaska State Troopers stopped a red Kawasaki
motorcycle for a moving violation. Investigation revealed Seth William,
age 21 of North Pole was driving in violation of an instruction permit.
William was issued a summons and released.

Type: Kidnapping and Assault in the 4th Degree
Text: On 9/7/08 at 1444 hours Alaska State Troopers received a report of
an assault at an Alston Road address for a 911 call. Donald Pannick,
age 52 of Fairbanks, was contacted and arrested for kidnapping and
assault in the fourth degree. Pannick was transported to Fairbanks
Correctional Center by AST.

Location: Cooper Landing
Case number: 08-74909
Type: Motor Vehicle Crash - Injury
Text: On 9/6/08, at 2014 hours, a Trooper from Girdwood responded to the
report of a motor vehicle crash with injuries at mile 40 of the Sterling
Hwy. An investigation revealed that Dale Wiggins, age 49 of Anchorage,
had been traveling north on the Sterling Hwy. near mile 40 with his
fourteen year old son, Joshua Wiggins. Wiggins' 1996 Subaru sedan began
to hydroplane due to excessive speed and water on the roadway. The
vehicle left the roadway to the right and impacted the tree line
destroying the vehicle and injuring Joshua's right leg. He was
transported to Central Peninsula Hospital by Cooper Landing EMS for
treatment of his injuries. Dale will be cited for negligent driving.
