You’ll notice today’s letters to the editor are heavy with ones critical of Sarah Palin, even though she enjoys an 80% approval rating in Alaska. Surely we will be accused of anti-Palin bias, even though Daily News editorials have strongly supported her on the three major accomplishments of her two-year term as governor (ethics reform, oil tax reform and the TransCanada gas line partnership).
There are several reasons our mail, at least for now, is heavy with criticism of Palin. People who are critical and disagree with someone are more likely to sit down and write than someone who likes or agrees with a politician. Negative energy is a great motivator, as Palin herself realized in her speech blasting away at Democrats Wednesday night.
Typically what happens in our letters section is that the negative side of a debate sends in a flood of letters. When those start to appear in print, those who disagree with the letter writers get stirred into action, and send in their remarks, adding more balance to the overall discussion.
We have received many pro-Palin letters critical of the Daily News for our coverage of Bristol Palin’s unmarried teen pregnancy. We have run a bunch of those already and don’t plan to run more, now that Palin herself brought Bristol and her boyfriend-fiance Levi Johnston onto the stage with her at the convention. Family is a major theme in Palin’s campaign – so both the favorable and unfavorable aspects of it are legitimate subjects of interest and discussion.
Another problem with some of the pro-Palin letters we have received: They don’t meet our guidelines, either for length, or including a daytime phone number for verifying authorship. A few of the pro-Palin letters have been rife with sloppy spelling and grammar and have not run for that reason.
(Here's an example, cut and pasted from today's email, exactly as received:
The ADN is really becoming a low class. Your first page story and photo of Miss Palyn is so crude. Dishing the dirt on politicens weather real or just wild is becoming your only way to go..booo Leave the kids alone.!!! Surly you can just dish dirt on adults..We don't need our own Anchorage branch of National Enquirer.)
But we know there’s a deep vein of support for Palin out there in our readership. So send us your thoughts to letters@adn.com. In the next few days, we’ll give priority to comments (pro and con) about Palin of 50 words or less, addressed to a national audience that’s intensely curious about Alaskan views of Palin. After that, we’ll get back to running regular letters, 225 words or less.

I am watching the election race with great interest from Melbourne Australia. Palin is definitely an interesting woman but I find it very worrying that she could be the Vice President. At first I was impressed that a female republican VP candidate was chosen but I've been doing a lot more reading and watching and I just think it is scary. Her experience just seems to limited for such a role. I want to see her do a press conference with the media and see how she handles it.
I have to bring up the inevitible too...as a mum myself (and a working one...I am news reporter) I don't know how she would do the job and give her kids, especially the baby, adequate time. I'm also not happy about her reluctance to talk to her daughter about sex education etc.

As well as one of the other
Mom, would you please calm down? I don't know how it could have happened -- we just rubbed noses once."
During the intense stress leading up to naming a vice presidential running mate... McCain was simply confused... casually ordering his aides to bring him the best person within the GOP to give him a BJ ...staffers mistakenly flew out Pallin, offering her the job of VP. Minor details were worked out with the family.
• "There was also some breaking news out of Dayton, Ohio, today where this morning Republican presidential candidate John McCain introduced the world to his third wife — actually, no, I’m sorry, that’s his running mate Sarah Palin, the freshman governor of Alaska, and star and producer of Emmy-winning 30 Rock. No, I apologize, the star of the Emmy-winning Will & Grace. No, no, I’m sorry, it’s actually the mild-mannered and troubled librarian from every Cinemax movie." —Jon Stewart
• "I think this is pertinent because McCain has been running this campaign based on 'we're at war, it's a dangerous world out there. The Democrats don't get that. I, John McCain, am the only one standing between the bloodthirsty Al Qaedas and you. But if I die, this stewardess can handle it.'" —Bill Maher
• "Palin and McCain are a good pair. She's pro-life and he's clinging to life." —Jay Leno
• "Actually, it was kind of a smart choice. McCain went with a woman because he didn't want to have to be in a position to have to get CPR from Mitt Romney." —Jay Leno
•I gotta admit, [Palin, the governor of Alaska] looked very comfortable at the podium. 'Cause it's kinda like Alaska: you look out on that [Republican] convention floor, nothing but white as far as the eye can see. … Jay Leno (NBC)
—"Another vice president who's a hunter, what could go wrong there?" (Leno); She "likes to shoot assault rifles. I'll say this for her daughter's boyfriend: the kid's got guts." (Letterman)
And I believe it’ll be her first big-time interview. And Charles Gibson, the first question he asks her, he says, “Are you ready to be President?” And Sarah Palin said, “Oh, fer sure!”
Oh, this is so stupid. Did you hear about this? Yesterday, Barack Obama attacked John McCain’s policies, implying it’s more of the same by saying, “You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.” Well, now McCain is demanding an apology. Do you believe two U.S. Senators arguing over lipstick? And neither one of them is Larry Craig.
Well, more good news this week for John McCain. It seems he is now matching Barack Obama ’s fundraising numbers. But he does have a slight advantage. See, for every dollar McCain raises, Medicare matches it.
Dick Cheney told reporters this week there’s no reason why Sarah Palin cannot be a successful vice president in the McCain administration. In fact, not only can she shoot a lawyer in the face, she can field dress him as well.
Out on the campaign trail this week, once again John McCain spoke about the nightmare of being stuck in a tiny 8 x 10 room thinking he might go crazy. Not in Vietnam — when he got stuck in the Capitol elevator with Joe Biden, and Biden wouldn’t shut up
And how about that Barack Obama? They are saying for the first time he’s starting to slip in the polls, but don’t worry. He’s got a plan. He’s going to go back to campaigning in Europe.
When Sarah Palin and John McCain make an appearance together, there’s always a brief hug, but no kissing. It’s just like Bill and Hillary.
There’s an old picture of Sarah Palin circulating on the Internet right now, and she’s wearing aT-shirt that says, “I may be broke, but I’m not flat busted.” John McCain was upset when he heard this and asked, “What’s the Internet?”

Way to NOT address why you ran the Bristol stories before they were on stage. Just because they appeared on a stage, as any family would, every bad story decision before and future stories about the kids are now justified.
Rosemany tired to use the justification in another editorial which essentially said "eveyone else it talking about it so shouldn't we?" My Mom loved the line "If eveyone jumped off a bridge would you?" It seems to apply here.

I like her she's got a lot of spunk but not sure if the GOP will get elected. I'm glad I don't have to choose. But give it a rest, that people are questioning her status. She's running for a very high position, so either take it or get out of the race.

You are doing a great job of covering the facts in your elections. The newspaper is great.
I wish McCain/Palin would stop indicating that the jet was sold on E-Bay when it wasn't.
As a mother and animal lover, sorry but I think Gov. Palin is outrageous. I cannot put anything else in print.
Keep up your good reporting.

"I put it on e-Bay".
There was no statement that it was actually sold on e-Bay. The bids that came in were insufficient. When the stated minimum was not met the jet was withdrawn and it was shortly thereafter sold by a broker.
"I put it on e-Bay" was not false; had the minimum bid been met it would have been sold.
If the thought of "animal loving" is meant to reflect upon Governor Palin's hunting for the table, I do hope this is a forthright statement from a vegetarian. Certainly not a misguided belief that the meat sold in supermarkets is somehow manufactured from petroleum byproducts.

It was McCain who said at a stump speech she "sold it on e-bay and made a profit too".
McCain believes he is better than the GOP. And he has no respect for women. He is using Palin just to win votes.
His first wife, a beauty queen, after a car accident left her crippled, he cheated on her till he met Cindy, another beauty queen. Their marriage license was dated before his divorce was final. He has made sexist jokes, about apes raping women to Chelsea Clinton being an ugly child.
He knows he cannot beat Obama on the issues, so he finds another beauty queen, a hockey mom that women can relate to. I am sure if McCain wins, he will find a way to get rid of Palin. He wants the lime light all to himself.

During the Great Depression, a common-man hero, James J. Braddock—a.k.a. the Cinderella Man—was to become one of the most surprising sports legends in history. By the early 1930s, the impoverished ex-prizefighter was seemingly as broken-down, beaten-up and out-of-luck as much of the rest of the American populace who had hit rock bottom. His career appeared to be finished, he was unable to pay the bills, the only thing that mattered to him—his family—was in danger, and he was even forced to go on Public Relief. But deep inside, Jim Braddock never relinquished his determination.

I know that she put the jet on e-bay, but she is acting like it was sold there. We are only getting half the story
Half-truths. I understand animals for food on the table, God knows food is too expensive anyway. I was talking about polar bears and wolves. I am not dumb enough
{believe it or not?} to think that we have to have some kind of balance, and it is tough to know what that is.
This is a tough problem.

Please help me get across this point about our Alaska wolves.
azbirds, I understand your concern about bears and wolves, and want you to know I have a lot of concerns myself regarding Sarah Palin's supporting of that policy. I am in Alaska, have been for over twenty years. Some of the things Sarah Palin purports to stand for, I agree with. But I can't get past the fact that as governor of our state of Alaska, she has supported the Board of Game's policy to shoot wolves from planes to eliminate any competition with humans for moose.
And not only that. I want this to be known to people outside of Alaska: Sarah Palin has supported this policy of eliminating any predators of moose, and was fine with the fact that state biologists went in and hunted wolf cubs down in their dens and killed them. To me, this is outrageous!
It's one thing (still bad policy) to hunt down and kill adult wolves from airplanes and helicopters, but entirely something else to kill cubs in dens. The biologists said they did it out of "humaneness" because the parents were killed and the cubs would have died from hunger anyway.
From what I know of wolves, perhaps that would have happened if the cubs were still nursing, however sad. But wolves have a family structure where the relatives in the pack do a lot of caretaking. How did the biologists know the cubs they killed were the offspring of the adults they killed, and how did they know that there weren't other extended family member wolves who would have nurtured the cubs?
I would like this to be known to people outside of Alaska, that Sarah Palin supports this policy regarding our wildlife.

Where Have I Seen Sarah Palin Before?
by Arash Kamangeer
I grew up in Iran and immigrated to US to avoid living in a theocracy. Lately though, the trajectory of US politics is something to worry about, not only to me, but also to many others in my predicament.
Wednesday night at the Republican convention was an especially poignant moment. I was watching Sarah Palin deliver her acceptance speech. As I was watching her, her family, and her adoring fans in the Republican convention, I could not overcome a feeling that I have seen this scene before...
Right after the Revolution in Iran and the establishment of the Islamic Republic, the Iran-Iraq war was started. To be fair, Iraq started that war, but the new revolutionary leaders of Iran saw the war as a godsend. They milked it for all it was worth. They labeled anyone against the war as a traitor or unpatriotic. Anyone who suggested that there may be a negotiated settlement was ridiculed and purged from power. Even Ayatollah Khomeini once said that this war is a blessing from God himself. You may see the parallels here already, but keep reading.
One of the problems the government faced was opposition from legions of mothers whose sons had been maimed or died in the war. To confront this problem, the government-controlled TV would parade a mother whose son had died in the war in front of the TV on a regular basis. Invariably, this "show mom" would be carrying an infant child and a few other siblings with her. And invariably, she would say something to the effect that "I have given one child to this 'sacred' war, and I am ready to give the next one." Almost always, there would be an adoring crowd who would follow her statements by chants of "Allaho-Akbar" (God is Great). And again invariably, her statements would follow by a not-so-veiled threat from her and the adoring crowd. She would say something like "I and my family would not tolerate traitors and betrayals to the faith and country". Then the crowd would break into several standard chants such as "Death to traitors" or "War, war, until victory."
Sarah Palin was much better dressed than the average show mom paraded on Iranian TV more than 20 years ago. The show moms were typically dressed in a black veil. But that’s about the biggest difference. The rhetoric was eerily familiar. When she was finished, I knew I had seen her before. Only that it wasn’t her. It was her ideological predecessors at a different time in a different country.
Now, I am not a politician. I just cannot understand the need to drag a child afflicted with Down syndrome in front of national TV at 10:00pm. Is that good for him? Or does the need to rally the base trump the needs of a child? Whatever the explanation, I am sure I have seen that child when he was carried in the arms of the Iranian show moms for the cameras. So much for family values.
And then I wake the next morning and read that Sarah Palin is quoted as saying that the Iraq war is a "task that is from God." It’s like déjà-vu all over again.

TIME FOR PALIN, MCCAIN TO STOP LYING
Dear Barack,
Next time someone asks what you think of Sarah Palin, please don't just call her a "skilled politician" with a "compelling biography." Call her a liar, too. Here's how that would work:
Reporter: What do you think of Sarah Palin?
You: She's a skilled politician with a compelling biography who lies a great deal.
Reporter: Wow! That's a pretty serious charge.
You: Actually, [insert name of reporter], it's not a charge. It's what certain people in your profession call "a fact."
Reporter (suspiciously): So you're calling her "a liar"?
You: Right. As in someone who lies a lot.
Reporter (gravely): With all due respect, Senator, if you're going to make that kind of accusation, you'd better be specific.
You: Sure. Remember when she said I'd never written a major piece of legislation? That was a lie. And when she said she opposed the Bridge to Nowhere? That was also a lie. And when she said I would raise taxes on American families? Again: a lie. And you know how she talks about opposing earmarks. Given that she hired a Jack Abramhoff-affiliated lobbyist to haul in $27 million in earmarks for her beloved small town, that's a real whopper. So she lies a lot, about my record and her own record. Just as a reminder, though, I'm not running against Sarah Palin. I'm running against John McCain, who is also a liar.
Reporter (even more gravely): Wait a second, so now you're saying --
You: Yes, John McCain is a liar. He routinely lies about my tax plan, which will cut taxes for 95 percent of families with children. He lies about his own tax plan, which will continue the tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires he once called "irresponsible." He lies about his support of renewable energy. He lies about his judgment on the Iraq War, a war he himself declared over five years ago, on national TV. He lies about his vetting of Sarah Palin, which was clearly reckless and inadequate. Virtually every time he opens his mouth he lies.
Reporter (frankly aghast): These are harsh words, Senator.
You: Not really. I'm just tired of listening to the Republican nominees and their surrogates lie with impunity. And the only way these liars are going to stop telling lies is for reporters like you, [insert name of reporter], to report when they lie. I urge you to show the same concern for the truth with us Democrats. Politicians shouldn't be rewarded for lying.
What would happen if you actually said this -- even some toned down version?
1. You completely dominate the news.
2. You force the media to assess your "inflammatory" claims, which, as it turns out, are true.
3. You force McCain/Palin/surrogates to stop lying, or at least risk being held accountable.
4. You reassure those who are worried you're not tough enough to protect the homeland.
5. You show us, your loyal supporters, that you don't plan to pull a Kerry/Gore.
6. Maybe (just maybe) the race starts to become more about real issues, where the Republicans get slaughtered.
Oh, and next time Bill O'Reilly asks you to admit you were wrong about the surge, tell him John McCain needs to admit he was wrong about the entire war, and to stop lying about his failure to support veterans. Honestly, dude, quit making John Stewart do all the heavy lifting.

ADN's Past Coverage of Palin
I am curious if your newspaper covered in depth, or at all, the allegations that Palin's former brother-in-law had threatened the family, driven his patrol car after drinking alcohol, and illegally shot a moose? All this before she booted out the head of Alaska's State Law Enforcement.
Palin's father said in an interview with CNN that he would take his children out hunting before school because they were "to poor to move". Did he have a license to hunt? Was the brother in law's alleged drinking on the job issue brought up to authorities at the time of the incident, was the incident where he threatened Palin's family ever taken to the authorities, or did then Mayor or Gov Palin look the other way. These are all serious issues that should be addressed before Palin steps into the White House. This letter will not be published I know because it has gone over the 50 word limit. This letter is meant for the ADN publisher and editor. It is up to you to do the right thing.
