This is a new blog dedicated to the general topic of crime and crime prevention in Alaska. We are starting by posting the Alaska State Troopers' daily logs, our own crime-related stories and other relevant items as we come across them. The Daily News encourages community engagement and discussion of issues of crime and criminal justice. Comments are not edited and will be posted immediately. We know that stories about crime often provoke strong reactions, but we insist that you keep your comments on point, use good taste and show courtesy toward other writers. Type: Minor Operating a Vehicle after Consuming Alcohol- Final Update

Text: On 9/4/08, Jessie Morgan, age 18 of Haines, pled no contest to the
charge of Minor Operating a Vehicle After Consuming Alcohol and she was
sentenced to pay a fine of $500.00 and complete 30 hours of community
work service.

Case number: 08-74011
Type: DWLS
Text: On 09-03-2008 at approximately 2125 hours, Alaska State Troopers
contacted H Joseph Sylvia, age 36 of Palmer, during a traffic stop on
Bogard Rd in Palmer. Sylvia was witnessed operating a 1996 Jeep Wrangler
when he was stopped for an equipment violation. Investigation revealed
that Sylvia was operating his vehicle with a suspended license. Sylvia
was issued a summons for driving while license suspended.

Type: Warrant Arrest

Text: On 09/03/2008, at approximately 1700 hours, Alaska State Troopers
contacted 25 yoa, Adam Alan Blodgett of Wasilla at a residence off
Edsulu Street in Big Lake during an investigation. Blodgett was
subsequently arrested for a $10,000 Arrest Warrant for Robbery in the
1st degree, Assault in the 3 degree and Theft in the 2 Degree. Blodgett
was remanded to MSPT.

Type: NVOL
Text: On 09-03-2008 at approximately 1840 hours, Alaska State Troopers
contacted Robert Frazer, age 18 of Wasilla, during a traffic stop on N
Sasbo Bluffs Loop in Wasilla. Frazer was operating a 1984 Isuzu pick-up
truck on N Sasbo Bluffs when he was stopped for an equipment violation.
Investigation revealed that Frazer was operating his vehicle without a
Valid Operator's License. Frazer was issued a summons for No Valid
Operator's License. In addition, Frazer was issued a citation for
failure to carry proof of insurance.

Location: Wasilla
Case number: 08-74039
Type: DUI

Text: On 9/04/08 at approximately 0143 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a report of a vehicle in the ditch on Palmer-Wasilla
Highway near Cottle Loop in Wasilla. Troopers contacted Chad M. Coval,
age 24 of Palmer, as the driver of the vehicle in the ditch.
Investigation revealed that Coval had been driving his 1990 Dodge pickup
on Palmer-Wasilla Highway when he lost control and drove into the ditch,
becoming stuck. Investigation further revealed Coval had been driving
while impaired and under the influence of alcohol. Coval was arrested,
transported, and remanded to Mat-Su Pre-Trial and charged with Driving
Under the Influence (DUI) with bail set at $1500.

Type: Search and Rescue

Text: On 9/03/08 at approximately 1610 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a distress call from Peter Van Klaveron age 36. Klaveron
reported that himself and Melvin Van Scmaik age 32, both from the
Netherlands, were stranded on Pioneer Peak, unable to climb up or down.
Troopers attempted to reach the climbers with Helo 3, but were unable
due to steep terrain and turbulent conditions. The Rescue Coordination
Center dispatched a helicopter that was able to land on the ridge and
rescue the climbers. Both climbers when contacted were in good health
and transported to Palmer.

Type: DWLS

Text: On 09/03/08 at approximately 1420 hrs, Alaska State Troopers
stopped a vehicle on N. Green Forrest Dr. near Palmer for a traffic
violation. The operator was identified as Katsuhige C. Lewis, age 28, of
Palmer. Lewis was found to be operating the vehicle with a suspended
driver's license. Lewis was issued a summons to appear in Palmer Court
for DWLS and released at the scene.

Location: Wasilla
Case number: 08-74031
Type: Vehicle Theft, Reckless Driving, NVOL, MVC-I
Text: On 9/4/2008 at 0007 hours Alaska State Troopers responded to a
single vehicle crash on Settlers Bay Drive near the Settlers Bay Park in
Wasilla. Investigation revealed a 14 year old male of Wasilla had taken
his mothers rented 2007 Ford Explorer without her permission. He had
picked up two male 16 year old friends of Wasilla and was driving down
Settler's Bay Drive when he passed another vehicle on a curve at a high
rate of speed and lost control of the vehicle going off the roadway and
struck a tree. Prior to AST arrival the two passengers had left the
scene and the driver was transported to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center.
All individuals involved in the crash were contacted by AST and
responsible adults were notified and took responsibility for the
juveniles. The driver was treated for minor injuries and released. The
two passengers stated they were not injured in the crash. All
individuals reported wearing seatbelts. The damage to the vehicle is
estimated at approximately $15,000. Charges are being forwarded to
Juvenile Justice and the District Attorney's Office.

Text: On Thursday, September 4, 2008, the Alaska State Troopers in St.
Mary's arrested Roland Johnson, 50 yoa of Mountain Village, at a
residence in Mountain Village on an outstanding warrant for Violating
his Probation.

Case number: 08-74112

Type: Assault

Text: On 9/3/08, the Stebbins VPO's received a report of an assault.
Investigation revealed that Jermaine Lockwood, age 25 of Stebbins had
assaulted his girlfriend. When VPO's attempted to arrest Lockwood he
locked himself in his house. A warrant was issued for Lockwood, its
service is pending. The victim did not require medical attention.

Text: On 9/3/08, the Stebbins City Office was burglarized and money

Type: Felony Eluding, DUI, MOACA

Text: On 09/01/2008, at 0104 hours, Marvin Odell Tate Jr., age 19 of
Kenai, was arrested for Felony Eluding and Driving Under the Influence
after he was stopped by Alaska State Troopers for a traffic violation
near the intersection of the Sterling Hwy and Pace Street in Soldotna.
Tate was remanded at Wildwood Pretrial Facility without bail. Tate was
also charged for Minor Operating after Consuming Alcohol.

Type: Assault IV - Domestic Violence
Text: On 9/3/08 at approximately 1841 hours, Soldotna Troopers responded
to a report of a physical domestic disturbance at a residence off of
South Miller Loop Road in Nikiski, Alaska. Subsequent investigation
resulted in the arrest of Richard Rogers, age 37 of Nikiski, for assault
in the fourth degree. Rogers was taken into custody and transported to
Wildwood Pretrial Facility where he was held without bail pending
arraignments.

Case Number: 08-41140
Type: After Arraignment
Text: On 8/5/08 Joseph Carpenter, age 55 of Chugaik pled guilty in
Palmer District Court to charges of Unlawful Methods and Means of Taking
Black Bears. The Alaska Wildlife Trooper investigation showed that
Carpenter placed bait in the field before registering the station with
Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Carpenter was sentenced for the
misdemeanor offense and ordered to pay $1000 bail with $500 suspended.
He was placed on one year probation
