Several PTA volunteers in the Mat-Su Borough have shared their struggles to find warm bodies share the heavy lifting for all the organizing these groups do. Theories on why this is range from parents being too busy, to a strict avoidance of the strictures inherent in organized groups. Do you agree, disagree, have your own theory?

Many years ago and

in a different community.

So maybe not applicable in this instance but definitely the same thing happened in other places of which I was aware.

The PTA in some places got re-named so as to avoid having to pay fees associated with a national or state organization. Then it gradually became apparent that the school administration wanted PTA members to be on hand to run the fund-raisers and hand over the money. But ask not how the money was spent. Avoid intruding with questions about disciplinary policies or curriculum and, in general, raise the money, sit down and enjoy an occasional pat on the head for "service".

Oh yes, please jump up and push for higher budgets and ever-growing bond issues. Then, when that's done, kindly go back to sleep.

The interest sort of faded.....

I am in total agreement with rfn. I served four years at Wasilla Middle School as a PTO member and as president. I found that most educators were parents and their own children and agendas come first. It didn't take much to get elected...just show up. District employees wanted you to be a 'service organization' that asserted no opinions. Parents were rude and thought you were the complaint department. I was being asked to address the budget issues when I had a hard time managing my own. I sold a lot of candy bars at sporting events and met a lot of good students who I still maintain relationships with today. I walked away a little bitter with just a thank you letter from a principal who later left the scene for grassier pastures. None of my seven children graduated from Wasilla High. I chose to homeschool the youngest ones. It eliminated a lot of other folks behavior problems tainting them. My children are homeowners and taxpayers now and they are great people. I am sure thankful the school board created so many options for our students educaation. I wish more parents were brave enopugh to try these methods. I have also spoke with parents from other areas of the country who say it is the same for them.
