This is a new blog dedicated to the general topic of crime and crime prevention in Alaska. We are starting by posting the Alaska State Troopers' daily logs, our own crime-related stories and other relevant items as we come across them. The Daily News encourages community engagement and discussion of issues of crime and criminal justice. Comments are not edited and will be posted immediately. We know that stories about crime often provoke strong reactions, but we insist that you keep your comments on point, use good taste and show courtesy toward other writers. A defense of life and property kill in Haines that took place after a brown bear charged a 17-year-old boy appears to have been justified, troopers said Wednesday. See the dispatch below.

Case Number: 08-73451
Type: Defense of Life/Property Bear Kill
Text: On 09/02/08 at 0810 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to a
reported Defense of Life/Property brown bear kill. Investigation
revealed the bear was killed near the Porcupine Road near 26 mile Haines
Highway after it charged a 17 yoa male who was on foot. The bear was
killed by the 17 yoa juvenile at a distance of approximately 15 feet.
No injuries were reported and the incident was witnessed by a 19 yoa
male. All required Defense of Life/Property paperwork was completed and
the hide was sealed at Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game in Haines.

Case Number: 08-607

Type: Holiday Traffic Enforcement

Text: During the Labor Day weekend, Juneau AST conducted 10 man hours of
dedicated traffic enforcement in and around the Juneau area. A total of
21 citations were issued during the patrol. They consisted of 6
speeding, 3 expired vehicle registrations, 1 DUI, 1 driving while
revoked/ suspended, 5 equipment related and 5 for fail to show proof of
vehicle insurance.

Case number: 08-72344

Type: Criminal Mischief IV

Text: On 08/29/08 at approximately 1250 hrs, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a report of a damaged shed at the Public Library in Big
Lake. Investigation revealed a vehicle backed into the shed causing
minor damage sometime between 08/26/08 and 08/28/08. The case is under
investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the
Alaska State Troopers at 745-2131/373-8300 or Crime Stoppers at
745-3333.

Location: Palmer

Case Number: 08-73760

Type: MVC-I

Text: On 09/03/2008 at approximately 0721 hours, Alaska State Troopers
received a report of a single vehicle rollover near mile 13 of the Old
Glenn Highway in Palmer. Investigation revealed that Marjorie Gearring,
age 17 of Palmer, was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe northbound on the
Old Glenn Highway when she lost control of the vehicle and went off the
road causing it to roll. Gearring sustained minor injuries and was
transported to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center by EMS. Gearring reported
wearing her seatbelt. The vehicle is estimated to be a total loss. No
citations were given.

Location: Kongiganak

Case number: 08-73764

Type: Assault IV-DV and Interfering with the Report of Domestic
Violence.

Text: On 9-2-08, at about 2023 hours, VPSO Jonathan Otto of the village
of Kongiganak arrested Marvin Jimmy 35 yoa of Kongiganak for assaulting
his wife. Jimmy was transported to the Kongiganak jail and than to
Bethel and lodged at YKCC pending his bail. Jimmy was also charged with
interfering with the report of domestic violence. Alcohol was
involoved.

Type: Assault

Text: On 8/29/08, Unalakleet AST received a report of a domestic assault
in the village of Koyuk. By the time AST was notified the male had left
the village. AST will forward the charge to the Nome DAO for review.
Neither party suffered injuries.

Case number: 08-73529

Type: Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor

Text: On Wednesday, September 3, 2008, the Alaska State Troopers in
St. Mary's issued court summons to Joseph Oney, 49 yoa of Pitkas Point,
and Linda Oney 45 yoa of Pitkas Point, after receiving a complaint from
the principal at Andreafsky High School in St. Mary's that their 15 yoa
son had not been in attendance at school since August 15, 2008. Linda
and Joseph Oney are being charged with two counts of Contributing to the
Delinquency of a Minor.

Type: MICS

Text: On 9/3/08, Unalakleet AST received a report from the VPO in St.
Michael of a student being found to be in possession of marijuana while
at school. The marijuana was seized and the student sent home with her
parent. A charge of Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance in the
Sixth Degree will be forwarded to the Juvenile Probation office.

Type: Assault

Text: On 9/3/08, Unalakleet AST received a report of a domestic assault
in the village of St. Michael. An adult female had assaulted her
juvenile sister, no medical attention was required. The assault took
place days before the assault. A charge of Assault in the Fourth Degree
will be forwarded to the DA.

Type: Burglary, Theft

Text: On 9/1/08, a resident of Aleknagik reported that her cabin in
Long Bay on the north shore of Aleknagik Lake had been burglarized. A
broom was missing from the cabin and slight damage to the hasp was
sustained. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to
telephone the Alaska State Troopers in Dillingham at 842-5641 or
Aleknagik VPSO at 842-2189.

Type: Burglary, Theft and Criminal Mis.

Text: On 09-03-08 at 1632 hours, Bethel AST received information from
VPSO Wassilie Galila that the Tuntutuliak Traditional Council Office was
found to be burglarized. Unknown person(s) had entered the building
during the evening of 09-01-08 by forcing a window open. About $7.00 in
cash was taken. Investigation continues.

Type: Death Investigation
Text: On 9/2/08 at approximately 1849 hours, Soldonta AST and Central
Emergency Services responded to a residence in Kasilof after receiving a
report of a deceased male. Subsequent investigation found Daniel
Morgan, age 48 of Kasilof, died of natural causes while cutting wood
behind his residence. Next of kin was present, and foul play is not
suspected.

Type: Snagging in Freshwater/ Over Possession limit of fish
Text: On 8-30-08, at 1648 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Mat-Su West
Post contacted Kim Buchanan, age 40, of Anchorage while sport fishing at
Jim Creek. Investigation revealed Buchanan was snagging fish and failed
to release snagged fish. Buchanan was also in possession of 6 Silver
Salmon over the legal possession limit. Buchanan was issued a citation
for snagging where bail was set at $110.00. Buchanan was also issued a
citation for possession 6 silver salmon over the legal limit where bail
was set at $230.00

Text: On 9-1-08, at 1655 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Mat- Su West
Post contacted Samuel Widener, age 19, of Anchorage while sport fishing
in Montana Creek. Investigation revealed Widener was using a treble
hook in single hook water. Widener was issued a citation where bail was
set at $100.00.

Location: Fort Richardson
Case Number: 08-73334
Type: Unlawful Methods-Sport Fish
Text: On 9/1/08, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, NOAA Enforcement Officers,
and Department of the Army Game Wardens contacted two individuals
operating a gill net in Knik Arm of Cook Inlet near Eagle River.
Investigation revealed Walter Savetilik, age 36 of Anchorage and Kia
Shuravloff, age 27 of Anchorage had operated a gill net in the water of
Cook Inlet near the mouth of Eagle River. The two subjects were
summoned to appear in Anchorage District Court. The gear used and fish
were taken as evidence. Army Game Wardens trespassed the two subjects
from the military installation and are pursuing additional charges.

Type: Sport Fish Without a Valid 2008 License
Text: On 8-30-08, at 1648 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Mat-Su West
Post contacted Chad Reed, age 18, of Anchorage while sport fishing at
Jim Creek. Investigation revealed Reed failed to purchase a valid sport
fish license prior to fishing. Reed was issued a citation where bail
was set at $210.00.
