Talk Dirt To Me

Do you love to make mud pies, grow a houseplant, eat veggies, or stop to smell the bouquet on your co-workers desk? Everyone enjoys a bit of green growing around him or her and then there are those that are passionate and needy when it comes to dabbling in the dirt. With this blog, we'll try to satisfy those needs and tell you about what's going on with the Anchorage gardening scene. You know, as I finally learned, it's all about the dirt.

Photographer and gardener Fran Durner (fdurner@adn.com) writes the blog.

Dahlia 'Envy'. Fran Durner photo.Dahlia 'Envy'. Fran Durner photo. The dahlias are blooming - finally! And none too soon. A promise made earlier this summer to colleague Julia O'Malley, that she could have any of my dahlias that were blooming for her wedding this past weekend, seemed a promise destined to go bad due to the cool, cloudy weather.

There were plenty of buds but they just clenched in their blooms, refusing to open. And since Julia's colors were orange, red and yellow, the white ones wouldn't do. But the sun finally coaxed out a few of the best blooms by Saturday.

Dahlia 'Pee Gee'. Wish I made a photo with the candles lit. Fran Durner photo.Dahlia 'Pee Gee'. Wish I made a photo with the candles lit. Fran Durner photo.Large glass bowls filled with water floated dahlias and candles and with the addition of marigolds and nasturtiums as filler where needed, the effect was lovely.

Dahlia 'Mick's Peppermint' finally opened on Monday. Fran Durner photo.Dahlia 'Mick's Peppermint' finally opened on Monday. Fran Durner photo.Of course by Monday it seemed as if all the different varieties of dahlias were out. I'm hoping frost will be reaaaaaly late this year and give us at least a month of dahlia pleasure.

Dahlia sightings

Yep, finally getting some dahlias to open in Muldoon, too. We had awesome weather for the State Fair, so maybe Mother Nature will allow us a long fall and the rest of the dahlias can show their stuff, too... Just love those flower heads!
