From Kyle Hopkins in Anchorage --
A little background on the Bristol pregnancy. We asked the question throughout the weekend, and as recently as Saturday Palin spokesman Bill McAllister said he didn't know if it was true.
"I don't know. I have no evidence that Bristol's pregnant," he said.
Palin's campaign spokeswoman, as well as Palin aide Kris Perry, didn't respond to e-mails and phone messages asking about the rumor Saturday and Sunday.
UPDATE: Just got off the phone with Palin's two in-state spokespeople.
McAllister said he found out this morning along with everybody else. I said people might find that hard to believe.
“I guess they can call me a liar then, but that’s the truth.”
Again, he said the only time he talked to Palin about it was when she approached him and said rumors about Bristol weren't true.
“I didn’t know anything about it. The only conversation I had with the governor about it was so long ago, that I don’t think it was true at the time.”
He said he doesn't remember when exactly Palin talked to him about it, but that it was when the Legislature was still in session and before we knew Palin was pregnant -- news that broke on March 5.
(If nothing else, the Palins have shown a knack for keeping a secret, from Palin's own pregnancy to her surprsie announcement as McCain's running mate, and now this.)
Sharon Leighow -- Palin's longtime spokeswoman -- wouldn't say anything about the pregnancy, saying it's a private family matter, not state business.
