Wednesday's trooper dispatches

Two motorcycles collided on the Elliott Highway Wednesday morning and left one man dead, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Donald Cornell, 64, was pronounced dead at the scene after his bike struck the back of another bike driven by Daniel Vanderhorst, 61, troopers said. Both men are from Las Vegas.

Vanderhorst was making a right turn to leave the road at Mile 65.6 at about 9:20 a.m. when his companion’s bike hit his, troopers said. They were travelling at about 25 mph, and both motorcycles went down, tossing their riders to the pavement.

Both men were wearing helmets, troopers said, but Cornell suffered severe head injuries and died. Vanderhorst was not injured, they said.

Troopers say alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors and they don’t expect to issue any citations.
