The Pebble Blog

The gigantic Pebble copper and gold prospect in Southwest Alaska is one of the touchiest topics in Alaska today.

In this blog, I'll track news that is significant or interesting about the Pebble project. I'll also try to generate discussion and information sharing about some of the claims and counterclaims about the project, and mining in general.

Please keep your comments courteous and on topic. If you violate the ADN comment policy, your posts will be deleted.

About Elizabeth Bluemink ebluemink@adn.com

I've been writing about mining in Alaska since 2004 and without a doubt, it is one of the most interesting topics that I cover at the Daily News. I've been a newspaper reporter for the past 10 years. In the Deep South, I specialized in reporting about environmental conflicts and pollution cleanups. For two years, I covered commercial fishing, mining and logging in Southeast Alaska. In my current job as a Daily News business reporter, I write about mining, tourism, Native corporations and other businesses.

Dragon Hunters is a

Dragon Hunters is a fantastic tale telling the adventures of two dragon hunters: the world has become a vast conglomerate of islands of varying size and shape. This babbling universe is mainly peopled with ruthless rogues, surly peasants and illiterate, petty lords Their main concerns revolve around two fundamental rules : Eat and don’t get eaten. For this new world has become infested with a terrible plague: omnipresent, monstrously famished, mutant creatures, are wreaking havoc. They are known as : THE DRAGONS GWIZDO and LIAN-CHU are two dragon hunters, but are a long way from being among the best. Their only real talents: the size of the hulking brute with the heart of gold, Lian-Chu, and Gwizdo’s talent for scams of all and any shape or form. dvd movies download

Very astute, It's about Pebble

clean water four will not only ensure some clean water but will make Pebble be done right or not at all...Yep on 4

  12     August 26, 2008 - 2:23pm | Alaskalilac

Influenced by my brain!

Let’s not get nasty. I follow my backer’s? Attacks by ‘you and yours’? I have no backers nor me and mine, other than friends and family that have nothing to do with mining OR fancy lodges and 10,000 s.f. cabins. I am a 28 year resident of this great state and I understand the political, regulatory and public relations process here, as well as the players. I have heard and read everything from both sides as well as the state. This is NOT about clean water and I do feel sad that our public process has been prostituted in such a way that it pits us all against each other. Sadly, our initiative process has become a battle of the bucks. And if this passes, more bucks for lawyers, including state paid ones.

  August 26, 2008 - 4:20pm | taro

Same boat...

I respectfully rescind the jabs in your direction. Agree to disagree on a few key issues you bring. The issue is about clean water. I too have studied both sides in depth. I do agree that the process is broken. It is sad that money rules. IMHO the 'players/decision makers' are earning less of my respect and for good reason (Palin's hat-off remarks, federal indictments...).

In a perfect world, we could rely on our representative government to fairly review and debate both sides of every issue including CWI #4 and Pebble. But when you have our leader of our government taking sides before a vote of her people... the hats come off. *Both my blue and staunchly red friends share this opinion.

You say prop 4 is flawed. I say the large scale mining permitting process and key decision makers are flawed and swayed by big money foreign mining interests.

  11     August 26, 2008 - 1:21pm | Valley411

You've got to be kidding me!

Local hire? Like Bruce Switzer? This was a cheap ploy intended to show Native support, and haven't they divided the Native community enough?

  10     August 26, 2008 - 12:35pm | Valley411

A new low from the Yes folks

My phone has been ringing all morning with upset people. Upset that the Yes on 4 people have found an even lower bottom in this battle and hired the homeless/public inebriates to wave political signs on the corners where they usually pan-handle. And most of those hired are Alaska Native. Contemptible. Deceptive. Everything their campaign has been about from the beginning.

  August 26, 2008 - 12:48pm | demorgan33

What's the problem

At least the anti-pebble crowd believes in local hire. Let's see how many locals are hired on if pebble-anglo-tinto-northern dynasty are allowed to go forward with this mine.

  August 26, 2008 - 1:36pm | kitty907

so you believe the pro BM4

so you believe the pro BM4 people should pay known pan handlers with drinking problems, thus continuing these people's destructive cycle of addiction, and possibly harming others for an election? I myself could smell the alcohol on their breath and watched as one of them almost fell while crossing the street into oncoming traffic. If you wish look for yourself at the corner of Seward Highway and Northern Lights.

Job Creation Up in Anchorage

This morning one of the “Yes on 4” sign wavers asked me what this 4 thing was all about anyways, and how much I was getting paid to hold my “No on 4” sign. I said this isn’t a paid job for me but a cause I believe in and briefly explained the issue to him as cars sped by, honking, shaking fists, and waving various fingers. He and his buddys seemed surprised that most of us “No on 4” people were not paid to be there.

To use President Bush’s line, maybe this “Yes on 4” drive is one of those jobs that working Alaskans won’t do, so we need to get some panhandlers to do it. Mayor Begich can post job creation numbers, the sign-wavers can unionize and perhaps even form a new immigration category. Imagine that. They could then go on strike and not just distract traffic, but really tie it up like pro’s. What a weird situation.

Thank you Bob Gillam.

No on 4.

  August 26, 2008 - 5:44pm | Sockeyemark

People Voting yes are gainfully employed

Don't have time to sit on a street corner with a sign, I have paid my sons to hold signs for me today.
Guess the mining industry is not that well paid, so I'm wondering why all the No signs?? Is clean water to much to ask??

  9     August 26, 2008 - 11:11am | Alaskalilac

For all taro’s reasons – VOTE NO!!

Make a strong statement indeed, and see beyond the veil laid out by one rich businessman pouring secret money into a sleazy, money bundling operation like Americans for Job Security and the best shills and political hacks that money can buy. Vote NO to say yes to clean water….VOTE NO to say yes to the fishing industry….VOTE NO to say yes to this exploratory project that could bring hope to a part of our state that is sorely lacking in hope. Please do vote your conscience and not by misleading Outside influences like AJS. Vote NO to passing this special interest, technically flawed and totally unnecessary, emotional and divisive document written behind closed doors. VOTE NO to our resource development being decided by judges and who can hire the best lawyers.
And by the way, Taro’s language is taken straight off a ‘messaging’ template that all the enviro organizations are taught by. I’ve personally seen it. They paid a lot of money to an Outside consultant to do polls and determine what "resonates" with Alaskans. What frightens Alaskans is more like it.

  August 26, 2008 - 1:00pm | taro

amazingly inaccurate POV...influenced by???

Good to see some of the millions spent by Anglo and NDM has 'resonated' with you Lilac. Believe it or not my post was from my own creation and not from a 'template' you refer to. I belong to no environmental group. I am a 30 year Alaskan resident who is very familiar with the Bristol Bay Region.

So pre-emptively speaking, before you follow your backer's typical rhetoric and path towards the attacks you and yours repeat so exhaustively, try listening and respecting a fellow Alaskan's opinion and have a nice day.

  8     August 26, 2008 - 9:07am | taro

YES ON #4... vote by conscience and not by misleading influence.

Vote YES on #4 for a future our kids and generations of Alaskans can 'take in' for perpetuity.

Let's not rely on a short-sighted vision of what we (i.e., foreign mining companies) can 'take out' of our home.

Make a strong statement and say yes to CLEAN WATER. Yes to FISHING JOBS. Yes to A FUTURE. Please look into yourself, your kids and see beyond the veil laid out by the foreign-owned mining companies and the groups and people influenced by them.

While you read the ballot today, vote by conscience and not by misleading influence. Thank you.

  7     August 26, 2008 - 6:56am | pmjusa

Just Say No.

Why vote No? Vote No for no more lawyers and 6th circuit judges making our decisions on development. No for no more NIMBY political land lockups in Alaska. No to environmentalist influence on skulls full of mush. Last but not least, vote No for the kids and the fish.

  6     August 26, 2008 - 4:33am | Sockeyemark

4 Clean Water 4 your kids

Go 4 it,,,,,,,yes 0n 4

  5     August 25, 2008 - 6:21am | jokeener

Jay Ramras will vote NO on BM4

Even Jay Ramras has finally seen through this hoax. Ramras used to be Gillam's man and supported the earlier versions of the two initiatives when they specifically targeted Pebble. Of course, those efforts were unconstitutional; therefore, the anti-Alaska lawyers re-wrote the measure to attack ALL large scale mining proposals in order to satisfy their benefactor's mandate. They made it amibiguous enough to make careers for themselves for decades to come. The anti-Alaska lawyers will make millions and millions of dollars if this outrage is passed.

BM4 is an attack on Alaska, Alaska's workforce, Alaska's pride, Alaska's constitution, Alaska's native peoples, and Alaska's legal and environmental integrity.

  August 26, 2008 - 1:49am | ahnamarlene

WHATEVER JOKIE

attack Ho-Hum...its the other way around..these and other mining proposals been weasling there way outta regs BIG TIME all along,..this is like giving Jay Ramras a shovel to go dig a shovel down the diamond center for precious medals 2 feet underground..BM4 NEEDS your vote YES JOKEHEAD..IF you do know whats good for you..

No on 4

Sheese! No on 4!

  4     August 24, 2008 - 10:57pm | PuckFebble

Day late, buck extra.

The damage is done. Why bother at this point?
DNR waited until the last days before the election to provide thier questionable opinion, should have been cleared by both sides and posted at least weeks ago if not months.

Then Palin steps way over the line with her statements. The notion she thinks she can get away with those irresponsible statements by taking her hat off is a joke.

How can we trust the "process" when they cant even get a basic informational website up in time?

  3     August 24, 2008 - 5:11pm | Sockeyemark

It's TIME

The truth is that the heart of the initiative is in the right place -- protecting Alaska's salmon fisheries against pollution from new mines.

The legal language in the measure needs fine-tuning. We know that. Voters should approve it, and hand the new law over to the Legislature to clean up the rough edges.

BOTTOM LINE: Yes to Ballot Measure 4, to keep big new mines from dirtying salmon

  August 25, 2008 - 10:05pm | NoBob

Wow! Now even Sockeyemark says Measure 4 is a POS!

One would think that Bob Gillam's high priced lawyers could do better that the grammar and spelling monstrosity with words added by a court. Yetch! Here's my prediction on what the legislature will do . . . They will take this thing and say it says what the AG says it says--it's the same as existing law.

So in the end Bob Gillam will have sent a couple of million of laundered money to AJS to be spent on Measure 4, and a few hundred thousand to RRC to be spent on Measure 4 and a few hundred thousand of his own money that he admits to--all for nothing. Hardly anyone else has spent a dime on supporting Measure 4. And even the sign wavers are paid. BS The legislature will look at this and say Bob Gillam can't buy Alaska. He shouldn't be allowed to put Alaska through the ringer for his stupid vacation home.

(And sorry I haven't been here for the fun and games the past couple of weeks--looks like there are a few hundred posts to read to catch up. Should be fun. Perhaps tomorrow.)

  August 24, 2008 - 6:43pm | rfn

A measure in need of "fine tuning"

should not even be on the ballot.

If approved anything conceded by its' backers to be incomplete and vague (in need of "fine tuning") becomes law as written, no matter how badly.

Measure 4, with its' need for "fine tuning" is a boon to lawyers and a vicious assault on the state treasury....not to mention jobs and Alaska's overall economy.

More reason than ever, this admission of fatal flaws, to vote NO on the disingenuous Measure 4!
