We are starting by posting the Alaska State Troopers' daily logs, our own crime-related stories and other relevant items as we come across them. The Daily News encourages community engagement and discussion of issues of crime and criminal justice. Comments are not edited and will be posted immediately. A bootlegger who tried to sneak 15 bottles of Monarch Vodka from Bethel to a dry village was busted after troopers found his plane tickets in a booze-filled backpack he denied was his. See the dispatch below.

Text: On 8-16-08 at 2229 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report
of intoxicated youths in the area of the public library. Troopers
contacted Donald Astry, age 18, of Ketchikan, in the parking lot of the
Library. Investigation resulted in Astry being issued a summons for
Minor Consuming Alcohol.

Type: Sexual Assault II
Text: On 08/19/08, at 2323 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received a
report from the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines in reference to a sexual
assault that occurred on board the M/V Serenade of the Seas between two
crewmembers. Investigation revealed that on 8/19/08, Serkan Tezsay, age
30 of Turkey, sexually assaulted a female crewmember in her cabin. On
8/21/08, at 0930 hours, Tezsay was placed under arrest after the cruise
ship arrived in Juneau and charged with one count of Sexual Assault in
the Second Degree. Tezsay was lodged at the Lemon Creek Correctional
Center on no bail.

Text: On 8-20-08, at 2122 hours, 24 year old Sarah Morin of Juneau
contacted AST after becoming lost due to darkness while hiking the West
Glacier Trail from Mt McGinnis. AST contacted Juneau Mt Rescue and they
formed a three man team and hiked about 3 miles up West Glacier Trail
where Morin was found. She had taken a wrong turn, lost the trail and
was located in an area which required rope rescue. All team members,
along with Ms. Morin were back down the trail about 0500 hours. No
medical attention was needed.

Text: On 8/21/08 at 0853 hours, Alaska State Troopers contacted Pamela
D. Dickison, age 40 from her residence in Saxman. The Ketchikan
District Court had issued an arrest warrant for Dickison regarding her
failure to comply with her requirement to perform community work
service. Dickison was arrested without incident and remanded to the
Ketchikan Correctional Center with no bail.

Type: Burglary in the First Degree, Theft in the Second Degree
Text: On 08/20/2008, at approximately 2045 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a Burglary in the area of mile 79 of the Glenn Highway in
Chickaloon. Investigation revealed suspects gained entry through the
front door. Several items, including a firearm, and tools, were taken
from the residence. The vehicles in the yard were damaged. The stolen
items are worth approximately $1,500.00. Damage to the vehicles was
estimated at $2,200.00. The case is currently under investigation.

Text: On 8-20-08, at about 2030 hours, Alaska State Troopers arrested
Larry Brown, age 39, of Wasilla, on two outstanding warrants for Failure
To Appear on the original charges of Driving While License Revoked and
Improper use of Registration and Title. Brown was contacted on Ridgeview
Drive after the vehicle he was a passenger in was reported to be acting
suspicious. Brown was transported to Mat-Su Pretrial where he was booked
into jail with bail being set at $1000.00

Text: On 08-20-08 at approximately 2027 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to an address on Knox Road in Wasilla for the report of a
deceased person. Investigation revealed the victim, Joaquin Alexander
Bendz age 39 of Wasilla, was found deceased in his home. No foul play
is suspected and the investigation is continuing. Next of Kin have been
notified.

Type: MVC-Injury
Text: On 8/21/2008, approx. 0605 hours, Alaska State Troopers and
Mat-Su Borough EMS responded to a two vehicle MVC on South Inner
Springer Loop at East Rebarchek Avenue in Palmer. Investigation
revealed that 61 yoa Littleton F. Buxton of Wasilla was traveling
northbound on South Inner Springer Loop, operating a blue 1999 Ford
Ranger pick up truck when he failed to yield to a red 2001
Harley-Davidson motorcycle, traveling southbound on South Inner Springer
Loop and being operated by 42 yoa Lori B. Pittman, while Buxton was
turning left onto East Rebarchek Avenue. The two vehicles collided at
an angle causing estimated $3,000.00 damage to the motorcycle and
estimated $2,500.00 damage to the pick up truck. Pittman received minor
injuries in the collision and was treated and released by EMS at the
scene. Pittman was wearing a helmet and Buxton reported wearing his
seat belt at the time of the collision. Buxton was uninjured in the
collision. Buxton was subsequently issued one traffic citation for
failure to yield when turning left and one traffic citation for failure
to provide proof of insurance.

Type: Assault in the Fourth Non DV
Text: On 8-21-08 at 0420 hours a non DV assault was reported to
Troopers. The twenty two year old male victim reported that he was
assaulted. His injuries consisted of one of his teeth being knocked out.
Alcohol was involved. The investigation continues.

Text: On 8/21/08, VPSO Leonard Raymond arrested Dale Otten, age 32 of
Stebbins for a probation violation after finding him highly intoxicated
in violation of his probation. Otten was lodged at the Stebbins Jail

Text: On 8-16-08, approximately 0340 hours, the St. George Village
Public Safety Officer (VPSO) responded to a report of a domestic
disturbance.
Todd LESTENKOF, age 29 of St. George Island assaulted his girlfriend and
was taken into custody for Assault IV, Criminal Mischief and Reckless
Endangerment. LESTENKOF was taken to jail where he was held pending
arraignment.

Text: On 8/21/08, approximately 1025 hours, the Buckland Village Police
Officer arrested 21 year old Randy Ray Lee on an outstanding arrest
warrant. Lee failed to appear for arraignment on the original charges
of Robbery 2nd degree and Theft 3rd degree. Lee was transported to
Kotzebue and remanded into the Kotzebue Regional Jail on bail of
$1,500.00 cash only.

Type: Violation of Condition of Release
Text: On Wednesday, 8-20-08, at about 2048 hours, Alaska State Troopers
stopped a white 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe for equipment violations on Mill
Bay Road. Subsequent investigation by State Troopers revealed the
driver 22 YOA Arliss Andrew Abalama of Kodiak was in violation of court
ordered conditions of release. Abalama's conditions stipulate he is
only permitted to drive between his residence and work. Abalama was
remanded at the Kodiak Jail without bail.

Text: On 8/17/08 Alaska Wildlife Troopers concluded an investigation
into a report of Commercial Fishing During a Closed Period.
Investigation revealed that Sheldon Katchatag, of Unalakleet, failed to
remove his commercial net prior to the end of the open commercial period
on 8/5/08. Fish caught during that period were seized and Katchatag was
cited for the offense.

Type: Take Cow Moose Closed Season
Text: On 8-20-08 Alaska Wildlife Troopers received a tip from a
concerned citizen that an illegal cow moose had been shot near five mile
Funny River Road. Investigation revealed 22 year old Jolan Jones of
Soldotna shot a cow moose without a valid license during a bull only
season. Further investigation revealed Jones purchased a class 5A
resident license but had only lived in Alaska approximately two weeks.
Jolan was issued a summons for taking moose in a closed season and
citations for taking moose without a locking tag, hunting without a
valid license, and omitting a material fact on an Alaska class 5A
license. Jones' bail was set at $830.00 on the violations. Arraignment
for taking the cow closed season is set for 9-19-08 in the Kenai
District Court.

Type: Gillnet Obstruct More than 1/2 Stream
Text: On 8/20/08 at approximately 1610 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers
observed a gillnet blocking the entire width of a tributary of the
Innoko River, near Shageluk. Investigation revealed Christine M.
Dutchman, age 53, of Shageluk was responsible for the net. Dutchman was
cited to appear in Aniak Court for obstructing more than 1/2 of a
stream.

Text: On 8/21/08, Alfred Hammons 36 YOA of Palmer, was cited by the

Type: Waste of Game
Text: On 8/11/08 a Tuluksak resident reported the carcass of a bull
moose in the Kuskokwim River near Tuluksak. Further investigation
showed that a mature bull moose had been shot and the carcass wasted.
The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information on this
case may call the Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Bethel at 543-5918.

Type: Sale of Alcoholic Beverages, Alcohol Importation
Text: On 8/20/08, Bethel ABADE Investigators contacted Julian D. Sunny,
20 of Bethel, at a local air carrier after receiving an anonymous tip
that Sunny was transporting alcohol to Tununak, a dry community. There
was a backpack behind him, which he claimed was not his. The backpack
did not have a name on it and contained 15- 750ml bottles of Monarch
Vodka. Sunny denied he was transporting alcohol and consented to a
search of his suitcase. No alcohol was found. The backpack was seized
after failed attempts to find the owner of it. During the search of the
back pack, an airlines ticket and court documents were found inside with
Julian Sunny's name on them. Sunny was arrested and charged with Sale of
Alcoholic Beverages and Alcohol Importation. He was transported to
Y.K.C.C. and remanded accordingly.
