The Pebble Blog

The gigantic Pebble copper and gold prospect in Southwest Alaska is one of the touchiest topics in Alaska today.

In this blog, I'll track news that is significant or interesting about the Pebble project. I'll also try to generate discussion and information sharing about some of the claims and counterclaims about the project, and mining in general.

Alaska is a very nice place. I hope to be able to go to Alaska and by then to be able to quit smoking once and for all. Nowadays we are fighting back and trying to find out more about quit smoking medications in order to be able to avoid the secondary affects and use only natural ways to quit smoking as something that you all people have to consider!

you got ran over by Sarah's bus and you're still kickin' (she's running a lot of people over with dat dar bus lately).

Prop 4 passing wouldn't have stopped Pebble, they still need to go thru the permitting process like any one else. They better have considered all factors before submitting and it better be a sound plan too, or else it's going to get a thumbs down. Everyone is watching and that's a good thing.

Put a lawyer out of work, vote NO on BM4.

You don't need it. You'll probably get hired by some foreign oil company working here in Alaska. They will pay great wages and extend excellent benefits to you and your family. Give you proper technical, management, and safety training. Lastly, they will probably spotlight you in one of their infomercials showing what good stewards they are to the community. Responsible resource developement is good a thing. Cheers!

I would back it all the way, but it's quite obvious that Pebble Mine is NOT responsible resource development. Bristol Bay has a thriving Renewable Resource developed as we speak. Pebble would only put that in jeopardy. Wrong Mine Wrong Place I've caste my vote,

I'm sorry did I miss something...

since when was this about Pebble? Last time I read BM4 there was nothing in it about Pebble or Bristol Bay. All I read is a bunch of fuzzy words that lawyers will have heyday with. For example, the current laws are more descriptive as well, not only do they protect salmon but all 'aquatic' life. That would include rainbow trout no? BM4 doesn't even do that. The current law even protects the BB lodge owners (think Gillam & Kraft) resource, trophy rainbow trout! Now that's a responsible regulation.

I don't want to hear anything about "intent" which is what Switzer spoke about a couple of days ago either. That's was simply ludricrious the law is only about PEbble, that's deceptive and dishonest.

If you wanted to target Pebble maybe you should go about a different way. This iniative applies to all mines and it's left of lawyers to sort out. Now how exactly would that benefit Alaskans?

Go about a different way and flush this murky BM4 down the drain.

ballot measure 4 adds to current regulations, does not do away

with what is on the books. Current regulations have their fair share of murky waters also. Ballot measure 4 adds some clarity actually. So to answer your question, you are missing something

Next target for the wealthy lodge owners is elimination of commercial fishing so they can have the salmon entirely for them and their (corrupt?...hey, after all politicians have been invited) guests. Somehow their plight will not arouse all that much sympathy.

Just the wilderness.

Others finding themselves unable to fish commercially when the next blow is struck may want sympathy but, as noted, it will be in short supply.

Silence is not about to happen so long as there are falsehoods to be contradicted.

BTW, inserting an exclamation point (!) in place of a letter does not render the word "un-profane". Let us hope some among us pay more attention to fishing rules and regulations than they pay to the rules of this blog. Faint hope but worth trying......

That's a new low. I won't dignify such hateful remarks.

If there even ever is a mine, it is on state land so NO profits will go to Native corporations, I don't believe. NANA and others oppose this because it is so poorly written there are no guarantees what mines it will impact. Mines like Red Dog have to continually get new permits. Here is what DNR said: "The Ballot Measure appears to exempt existing large-scale metallic mines that have all their permits. However, existing mines will likely need changes to their permits to accommodate future changes in their operations. All future changes in facilities or operations at existing mines would fall under the initiative." Is that clear enough?

What about Alaskans? I've been here most of my life, my wife was born and raised here. My daughter was born and raised here. We ARE native Alaskans. And any company that has the right to hire on racial bias should be put out of business or have their company seized and revamped to hire fairly no matter what your race. They try to hide behind the banner of "hiring shareholders", NOT, they're hiring family and underqualified people because of their bloodlines! I SAY BS! Vote yes on BM 4 so they can really screw our state up, then we can sue the hell out of em until the lawyers own everything. NANA and all the rest of the mining industry can take it all! and when everything is gone, mother earth will take care of herself, maybe take on a new look like say, oh I don't know, maybe MARS! GREED IS GOOD!

It should be interesting. Plus it will be good to get some more info about the clean elections measure as well. Id still like to hear just how quick mining will be shut down in Alaska. By the noise coming from the AAMS group, goldpans will be outlawed as well. Ill give an update when its over.

They are a public agency, so aren't they allowed to make a public remark, like our publicly elected leaders, publicly appointed judges?

I believe there is something in the constitution that gives them a right, but I can't remember exactly...

I meant what you'd like to see kept secret in addition to the information as to where the contributions to the "Keep Alaska An Exclusive Playground For The Very Rich" measure are coming from.

A rather deep, dark secret, that. I wonder what might happen to the misled "yes" voters were that information to be leaked!
