This blog is for those of you who would like to add more local foods to your diet, meet local farmers, learn new recipes based on seasonal eating and preserving the summer harvest. Food is political too, so here you can learn about and influence local and national agriculture issues, and participate in helping to rebuild the Alaska food system. May each of you chew happily and wisely.
Kim came to Alaska in 2000 and studied sustainable development at APU. Working for Chickaloon Native Village, she helped launch a sustainable foods initiative that included organic gardening classes, community gardens and a four-season greenhouse that produces fresh produce. She helped bring the national conference, Bioneers, to Alaska in 2004. Her passion in working toward food security and rejuvenating the Alaska food system influences all aspects of her professional and personal life.

In case you missed it, here's a link to Thursday's KTUU valley report on how produce from Valley farms is doing during this cool and sometimes rainy summer we're having. Here's a screen grab of the story:
Cool summer: Valley farmers say their crops are about a month behind schedule. Ben Vanderweele says the cool weather didn't hurt the quality of his crop. He harvested lettuce Thursday.
The reporter interviewed Ben Vanderweele, who said his crop is just coming to market, about a month late.
"It just took this long to mature and to harvest, which is a lot longer than usual. Normally in Alaska, because of our long days, long sunlight, long light and decent temperatures it comes off much quicker, but not this year," said Vanderweele.
But he also said the quality of his produce wasn't hurt by the slow growing season.
"It is very, very good quality. It grew slower because our temperatures were cooler than other years, but that seemed to help the quality," he said.
Vanderweele has farmed for 42 years in the Valley.
Another long-time Valley farmer, Bruce Bush, said sales at his roadside stand have really been hurt this year.
"It's about the worst summer I've seen ever, since I've been farming. We usually start selling at the store here Fourth of July so we're about three weeks behind now," said Bush.
Bush said he's worried that the growing season will be short and that snow is coming down the mountains soon.
Meantime, the news footage showed some gorgeous-looking heads of green lettuce.
