Crime Blog

This is a new blog dedicated to the general topic of crime and crime prevention in Alaska. We are starting by posting the Alaska State Troopers' daily logs, our own crime-related stories and other relevant items as we come across them. The Daily News encourages community engagement and discussion of issues of crime and criminal justice. Comments are not edited and will be posted immediately. We know that stories about crime often provoke strong reactions, but we insist that you keep your comments on point, use good taste and show courtesy toward other writers. Posts that violate the Terms of Use will be deleted, and repeat offenders will be banned from adn.com. When presenting factual information, take care that it is accurate and cite and/or link to sources where appropriate.

Illegal dumping may have spurred heart attack

A man who appears to have been in the middle of illegally dumping concrete blocks in a pull-out near Eklutna was found dead this week, according to Anchorage police.

Birchwood resident Lewis Raymond Holmes, 59, was discovered slumped in the bed of his Ford pickup Monday afternoon by a motorist who spotted it near the 13000 block of Eklutna Lake Road a day earlier, police Lt. Paul Honeman said.

There were concrete blocks in the bed with Holmes and others had been removed, he said. Police think Holmes may have died from a heart attack during the exertion, he said.

The state medical examiner is conducting an autopsy, though foul play is not suspected, Honeman said.
