This is a new blog dedicated to the general topic of crime and crime prevention in Alaska. We are starting by posting the Alaska State Troopers' daily logs, our own crime-related stories and other relevant items as we come across them. The Daily News encourages community engagement and discussion of issues of crime and criminal justice. Comments are not edited and will be posted immediately. We know that stories about crime often provoke strong reactions, but we insist that you keep your comments on point, use good taste and show courtesy toward other writers. A Noorvik man who once tried to kill an Alaska State Trooper has been arrested on a warrant for violating probation conditions from that case. See the dispatch out of Noorvik.

Text: On 8-4-2008 at approximately 1916 hours, AST issued a summons for
driving while license is revoked to 19 year old Angela Entwit of
Ketchikan. Entwit had been contacted by troopers for an unrelated
matter and found to be driving while her Alaska driver's license is in a
revoked status.

Case number: 08-64193
Type: DUI
Text: On 8/4/2008 at approximately 1630 hours Alaska State Troopers
responded to a REDDI report in the Big Lake area. Troopers made contact
with the vehicle a 1991 Chevy Pickup at the Big Lake Arctic Cat Shop and
identified the driver as Randy Smothers (49 yoa of Big Lake).
Investigation revealed that Smothers was driving while under the
influence of alcohol. Smothers was subsequently arrested and booked at
the Mat Su Pre Trial Facility on the charge of DUI. Smothers' bail was
set at $1,000 performance bond.

Type: DUI
Text: On 8/4/08 at approximately 2125 hours the AST South Central DUI
Enforcement Team stopped a vehicle near mile 47 of the Parks Hwy. in
Wasilla for speeding. The operator was identified as Chad L. Omaha, age
40, of Nevada. Omaha was found to be operating the vehicle under the
influence of alcohol and was arrested for DUI. Omaha was remanded to
the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility where he was held on a $2,500.00 bail.

Type: Burglary I

Text: On 08-04-2008 at approximately 2100 hours, Troopers responded to a
residence on S Hassler Dr, Wasilla for a reported burglary.
Investigation revealed forced entry into the residence through the front
door. Nothing was reported missing from the residence. Anyone with any
information concerning this investigation is encouraged to call the

Type: Violation of Condition of Release

Text: On 08-04-2008 at approximately 2250 hours, Alaska State Troopers
arrested Deborah R. Good-Hesselbach, age 58 of Wasilla, at a residence
in Wasilla for Violation of Conditions of Release. Investigation
revealed that Good-Hesselbach was intoxicated, contrary to court-ordered
conditions of release for a prior DUI. Good-Hesselbach was transported
to Mat-Su Pretrial Facility where she was remanded into custody. Bail
was set at $500.

Type: Burglary I, Theft II, Criminal Mischief IV

Text: On 08/04/08 at approximately 2115 hrs, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a report of a burglary at a residence on Meadow Lakes Loop
near Wasilla. Investigation revealed unknown suspect(s) made forced
entry into the residence and stole electronics worth an estimated
$1,100. The damage to the door is estimated at $500. The case is under
investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the

Type: Warrant Arrest
Text: On 8/5/08 at approximately 0023 hours, Alaska State Troopers
contacted Ernesto Avila, age 34, of Palmer during a traffic stop for a
traffic violation on Palmer Wasilla Highway near Ranch, Palmer.
Investigation revealed that Avila had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant
for contempt of court. Avila was arrested and remanded into Matsu
PreTrial with bail set at $500.00 cash corporate.

Type: Theft 2 & Criminal Trespass I

Text: On 8/4/08 at approximately 0844 hours, AST responded to a theft at
the Alaska State DOT yard in Palmer. Investigation revealed that
sometime between Friday (8/1/08) afternoon and 0700 this morning
(8/4//08), 4 sets of Light Force Running Lights were taken off of state
vehicles. Anyone with information regarding this investigation please

Type: Search & Rescue *****Update*****

Text: On August 4, 2008 at 1500 hours, Evan's remains were recovered
from the Tuntutuliak River by members of the Tuntutuliak Search &
Rescue. No obvious injuries were noted and no foul play is suspected.
Evan was released back to his family for burial.

Text: On 8/2/08 at 1400 hours, Alaska State Troopers contacted Tomas
Levi of Kalskag. Investigation revealed that Tomas had a warrant
(4BE-07-1079). Tomas was arrested on the warrant and transported to
Bethel.

Type: Assault IV-DV, Probation Violation

Text: On 8-3-08 at approximately 1510 hours Kotzebue AST received a
report of an assault in the village of Selawik. Investigation
determined that Paul Foxglove, 42, of Selawik was intoxicated and
assaulted his girlfriend causing pain and injuries. Foxglove was
currently on probation with conditions not to consume alcohol and not to
commit any violations of law. Foxglove was subsequently arrested and
transported to the Kotzebue Regional Jail and held without bail until
arraignment the following day.

Type: Warrant Arrest

Text: On Monday, 8-4-08, at about 1854 hours, Alaska State Troopers
contacted 21 YOA Jonyssa L. Ignatin of Kodiak at her Mill Bay Road
residence. Ignatin was arrested on two misdemeanor arrest warrants;
original charges Assault 4, Violation of Condition of Release, Criminal
Trespass 1, and Criminal Mischief 5. Ignatin was remanded at the Kodiak
Jail without bail.

Location: Noorvik

Case number: 08-64328

Type: Assault-III (Unfounded)

Text: On 8/5/08 at approximately 0200 hours, Alaska State Troopers in
Kotzebue received a report of a physical altercation involving weapons
in the village of Noorvik. The complainant was the village security
officer, who stated that the fight was still in progress and that she
was unable to locate the Village Public Safety Officer or the Village
Police Officer. Troopers chartered an aircraft and responded to the
village. Troopers contacted the reported victim in the assault at his
residence in the village. Investigation revealed that there had been an
altercation in the residence, and that at some point the "victim" had
pulled a knife. The "victim" was highly intoxicated, and was
uncooperative with the investigation. The "victim" denied any injury or
fear during the incident, and repeatedly stated that he did not want to
pursue charges. Troopers searched the village and several residences in
an attempt to locate the other participants in the incident, but were
unsuccessful. There was no DV relationship between the "victim" and the
other parties. Alcohol was a factor in the incident.

Location: Noorvik

Case number: 08-64332

Type: Warrant Arrest

Text: On 8/4/08, at approximately 0420 hours, Alaska State Troopers in
Kotzebue contacted Johnnie Carter Sr., age 55 of Noorvik, at his
residence in the village of Noorvik. Investigation revealed that Carter
had an outstanding arrest warrant for a probation violation. Carter is
currently on probation for a prior conviction of Attempted Murder in the
First Degree of an Alaska State Trooper when he shot at State Troopers
in 1995 when they were responding to investigate a domestic violence
complaint. Carter was taken into custody without incident. Carter was
transported to the Kotzebue Regional Jail facility and remanded with a
bail set at $50,000.00 plus a court approved third party.

Case Number: 08-63844

Type: Criminal Mischief in the First

Text: On 8-3-08 at 1100 hours it was discovered while doing a pre flight
inspection, of the Aniak Trooper aircraft, that someone had stolen
approximately twenty gallons of aviation fuel out of the left wing tank.
Aviation fuel cost seven dollars forty cents per gallon in Aniak. There
have been other thefts of aviation fuel reported in Aniak. Anyone with
information of fuel thefts in Aniak should contact the Aniak Trooper
Post. The investigation continues.

Type: Burglary, Theft II

Text: On 7/29/08 at about 1045 hours, a Teller resident reported
Grantley Harbor Tours was burglarized sometime between 1915 hours on
7/28/08 and 1030 hours on 7/29/08 and approximately $1,600 in cash
stolen. Suspect has been indentified and investigation continues.

Text: On 8/4/08 at about 0900 hours, a female resident of Teller
reported her 16 year old daughter was given alcohol on 8/2/08 by two
adult Teller residents. Suspects have been identified and charges
pending for Felony Furnishing Alcohol and Contributing to the Deliquency
of a Minor.

Case number: 08-63888

Type: Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance in the Sixth Degree

Text: On 8/3/08 at approximately 1700 hours, AST conducted a traffic
stop on a red 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix for a traffic infraction on the
Parks Hwy at mile post 302. AST identified Cody Wayne Lucas, 24 of
Fairbanks, as the driver. Further investigation revealed that Lucas had
two small clear plastic bags of marijuana in his possession at the time
of the stop. AST seized the marijuana and issued him a Uniform Summons
and Complaint for Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance in the
Sixth Degree and a citation for the original traffic infraction.

Type: Driving Under the Influence

Text: On 8/3/08 at approximately 1828 hours, AST conducted a traffic
stop on a white Ford F350 pick up truck for a traffic infraction. The
vehicle pulled over at the 297 mile of the Parks Hwy and the driver fled
from the scene on foot. The driver was identified as Shayne Grant
Flora, 30 of Fairbanks. Flora was intoxicated and was arrested and
charged with Driving Under the Influence. Flora was transported to Healy
AST for further investigation and then transported to Fairbanks
Correctional Center. Flora was held on a $1,500.00 bail at the
Fairbanks Correctional Center.

Location: Seward

Type: MVC-I

Text: On 08/03/2008, at approximately 2206 hours, a Cooper Landing based
State Trooper along with Bear Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Alaska
State Parks responded to 6 mile Exit Glacier Road in Seward for a
reported motor vehicle collision. Investigation revealed that Vincent P
Cummings Jr. 72 yoa of New Jersey was traveling eastbound on Exit
Glacier Road in a 2008 Dodge Caliber when it left the road for unknown
reasons and traveled 388 feet and left an embankment before coming to
rest on the driver's side. Cummings was extricated from the vehicle and
transported to Providence Hospital in Seward for his injuries. The two
passengers in the vehicle declined medical attention at the scene.

Location: Cooper Landing

Type: DUI

Text: On 08/03/2008, at approximately 2206 hours, a Cooper Landing based
State Trooper stopped a vehicle at 48.5 mile of the Sterling Hwy after
it was reported as a REDDI (Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately). The
sole occupant and driver, Troy Warren Smith 52 yoa of Anchorage, was
subsequently arrested for DUI. Smith was transported to Seward Jail and
remanded without incident.

Text: On 7-28-08 at approximately 1826 hours, Troopers responded to a
domestic disturbance at a Ninilchik residence. Investigation determined
Lowell Wilcox, 67, of Ninilchik, committed an assault. Wilcox was
placed under arrest for Assault III Domestic Violence x 2. Wilcox was
transported to the Homer Jail where he was remanded with no bail.

Text: On 7-15-08, at approximately 1856 hours, Troopers responded to a
disturbance at a residence in Anchor Point. As a result of Troopers

Text: On 7-23-08 at approximately 1925 hours, Troopers responded to a
REDDI report near mile 169 of the Sterling Highway. Troopers located
the vehicle near mile 157 and contacted Cornily Kalugin, 42,of
Vosnesenka, who was operating the vehicle. Kalugin was found to be
under the influence of alcohol and was arrested for Driving under the
Influence, and for Endangering the Welfare of a Minor I. Kalugin was
transported to Homer Jail where he was remanded on $1000.00 bail.

Type: Disfigure Tanner Crab

Text: On 8/2/08 Anchor Point Wildlife Troopers cited Robin Lipinski, 46
of Anchor Point for disfiguring sport caught tanner crab in a manner
that prevented the determination of legal size and sex. Bail was set at
$110.
