About the blog: Alaska is a wonderful and fascinating place. Whether its backcountry hiking, coastline kayaking or dining on a downtown deck, there truly is something for everyone. This blog picks up where the annual Daily News Visitors' Guide leaves off. The guide is published in late April, but that's just when summer fun starts heating up. Throughout the year, we hope to give readers a look at Alaska through local eyes. The blog also serves as a calendar of what's going on, a place to look for some outstanding vacation deals and other cool stuff. We invite your comments and your questions. E-mail me at alaskology@adn.com.
About me: I live in Anchorage, Alaska's largest city, and I'm the special sections editor at the Anchorage Daily News. My wife and I have been Alaska residents since 2000 and never plan to leave.

More trouble for trains

An Alaska Railroad train travels along Turnagain Arm south of Anchorage. The railroad sends trains both north and south of Anchorage. Flooding in Interior Alaska has stopped train traffic north of Denali National Park this week.
More news from the Alaska Railroad this week –- and it's not good if you were planning a train ride between Anchorage and Fairbanks. Below is a press release from the railroad about flooding.
In eight years, I've never been on the train. Gina took a short trip a few years ago when she worked for Alaska Magazine, and said it was wonderful.
I suppose a train ride to Denali needs to be another one of those things that goes on the always-expanding, Alaska to-do list.

---------------------------------
ANCHORAGE -- Flood waters in Nenana rose overnight submerging the Alaska Railroad's mainline track under six inches of water. All freight and passenger train operations have been stopped between Nenana
and Fairbanks.
Weather forecasts are favorable and river levels are expected to start lowering over the weekend. Crews continue to monitor water levels in and around Nenana.
Passenger service between Fairbanks and Denali is on hold until further notice. The southbound Denali Star passenger train will originate in Denali Park and continue to Anchorage as scheduled. Passengers from Fairbanks will be move by bus to Denali until further notice. The northbound Denali Star, which runs between Anchorage and Fairbanks, will stop in Denali and passengers will continue north to Fairbanks by bus.
Passengers needing information regarding train schedules can contact the Alaska Railroad passenger reservations at 265-2494 or toll free at 1-800-544-0552.
