One tequila, two tequila

To follow up on Thursday's National Tequila Day festivities, I thought I’d suggest a few ways to drink tequila without downing a shot or making a margarita.

My first suggestion is to head to the Bear Tooth Grill and talk to Amy Mack. Just the other day we were discussing how hard it is to get people back on tequila once they’ve had a bad experience with either shots or margaritas. However, it’s a diverse alcohol and can be served a lot of ways.

One suggestion is the Paloma cocktail. This is similar to the Grill’s Refresca de la Hacienda, or “house refreshment,” which is basically the way they serve tequila in legitimate establishments in Mexico (thanks, Amy). In Mexico you get tequila in a glass with a shot of squirt and lime.

At the Grill, they make their own “squirt” flavoring, and the Paloma gives you the option of using any type of grapefruit soda extract. Sure you can use Fresca but come on, ladies, how many times have we said “Let’s use Fresca! It has no calories!” and then tasted the drink and thought “Give me the Sprite.” I recommend good old calorie-laden soda.

--

Paloma

2 ounces blanco or reposado tequila

6 ounces grapefruit soda

One-half ounce lime juice

salt for the rim (optional)

Rim the glass with salt, fill the glass with ice. Add tequila and lime juice. Add soda on top. Enjoy on a hot day or just in general.

--

Amy’s recommendations for quality tequila include Jose Cuervo (and you thought it was just for shots and hangovers!), especially the La Familia version; Don Julio; Tequila Corazon; or Corralejo Tequila.

But, if you still refuse to try the stuff because of a terrible story or horrible hangover, then I want to hear about it! Share your good, bad or ugly episodes and comment below. Maybe I’ll compile a “How Not to Drink Tequila” book.

How Not to Drink Tequila

One of the worst ways of drinking tequila I ever witnessed was while I was at college; a State college I might add. It was during our hockey team’s annual rookie initiation party. The drink was called "Ram's Piss" - A tribute to the greatest mascot of all times - Cam the Ram. Here goes:

Equal parts cheap tequila and toilet water,
Warm it up in the microwave to about body temperature,
Pour the mixture into a disgustingly old hockey skate,
Tip it back and enjoy!!!

Makes me glad I played water polo…

THAT'S what I'm talking about!

I don't know... old hockey skate, or slightly used spandex water polo costume? Either way, it sounds awful. Great story. Now I'm going to go try and microwave that image out of my head.
