Talk Dirt To Me

Do you love to make mud pies, grow a houseplant, eat veggies, or stop to smell the bouquet on your co-workers desk? Everyone enjoys a bit of green growing around him or her and then there are those that are passionate and needy when it comes to dabbling in the dirt. With this blog, we'll try to satisfy those needs and tell you about what's going on with the Anchorage gardening scene. You know, as I finally learned, it's all about the dirt.

Photographer and gardener Fran Durner (fdurner@adn.com) writes the blog.

Wish ABG senior horticulturist Barbara Miller a happy birthday tonight during the Secret Garden Tour of her fabulous garden. Libations, gorgeous flowers and little secrets to be discovered tucked into the garden beds. And check out her huge astilboides leaf casts. It's also a fundraiser for the ABG. Tickets at their website or call 770-3692.

Photo by Fran Durner. As if two open gardens in one weekend wasn't enough to wear out any gardener, Les Brake, the Southern gentleman that he is, after many requests, will open his Willow garden for two encores. The first is this Saturday, July 26, from noon to 5pm and then again the following Saturday, August 2, from noon to 5. Suggested donations of $7 will benefit the Alaska Rock Garden Society in their fundraising efforts to help with a future seed collecting expedition. Some of the unusual plants in Les' garden are due to the first ARGS expedition to China in 2000. Ask him to point them out. 495-6525 for info and directions.
