Termination dust: it's a perspective thing

From Mat-Su reporter Zaz Hollander

There's fresh snow on the Talkeetna Mountains up behind Sutton. Could it be? Termination dust in July?

No, turns out. It couldn't. Termination dust, that early season snow that signals the end of summer, is only visible from the big city. "I know this is going to sound Anchorage-centric," National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Ludwig said with some trepidation, "but I believe it has to be seen from Anchorage because some of the mountains up there are pretty high."

Ludwig checked freezing levels Sunday night: a low-elevation but not unusual 5,500 feet. That means snow could fall at 4,500 feet. And there are some 5000- and 6000-footers up there.

So it's not winter yet in the Mat-Su. Just cloudy, cool -- and we've got bigger mountains than the big city does.

Hogwash!

Must be visible from ANCHORAGE??? Who created that rule? I've been here since 1968 and this is news to me. Meteorologist Bill Ludwig is mistaken. We Valleyites know termination dust when we see it, and we see it. For myself, I don't get worried until I see fresh snow on Baldy, but that's my personal gauge to know that pre-winter stuff must be done and done soon. So enough of the city-centric stuff. Termination dust is termination dust, and it's here!
