Commercial fishing is a bedrock industry in Alaska, and has been for more than a century. Every year scores of fishermen net millions of migrating salmon, challenge the icy Bering Sea to trap king crabs, lay miles and miles of baited hooks for halibut, and scoop up enough pollock for a zillion fish sticks. And when fishermen aren't out fishing, they're usually talking about fishing. That's what this blog is all about. Cast your net here for commercial fishing news and notes. And if you've got a bone to pick, post a comment.
About me:
I've pounded the commercial fishing beat for the Anchorage Daily News since 1999. I hail originally from Tennessee. I've never fished commercially, but I've spent much time as a journalist aboard boats and inside fish-processing plants. Of course, I'm a big consumer of Alaska seafood. One of my favorites: canned sockeye.

AL BURCH and TED STEVENS are best friends
WOW, now that Alaska Draggers Association has changed it name to AK Whitefish Trawlers does that mean they support a corrupt Senator Stevens? Al you've lied to me and to many others about the Rockfish Pilot Program; that you help engineer it into law with Ted's help of the stealth CJS rider on the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2004 is racketeering. Going to Rep.Pombo (Chair of US House Resources Committee at the time) with the help of Rep.Don Young to get another 2 years added to the Pilot Program was as insidious as it gets. Looks like Al's golden parachute of retirement just went down with the house as Ted had to give up his seats in senate committees. You bastards have been rigging fishing legislation for years and may you burn in hell. From AFA to Crab Ratz to Adak Pollock the name of the game was RACKETEERING.
Jeff Steele and Bobby T support senator Stevens so much maybe they should do some time with him to support him.
Wait until AFMB and Crab Ratz become part of the criminal indictments in the future, as both of the above are thick as thieves in the conspiracy.
Looks like Bobby T won't get to join the next fisheries organization (inmates are banned from admission) that is formed from honest and hard working Alaskan fishermen. I think we'll call it GAFF (Gulf of Alaska Fishermen's Federation).
Ted, Don, Ben, Trevor, and Bobby T need to be taken to the woodshed and have their butts beat-nothing like a good ole whoopin' to make you think clearer. I guess Federal prison gives you plenty of time to think about ones indiscretions.
