Alaskology

About the blog: Alaska is a wonderful and fascinating place. Whether its backcountry hiking, coastline kayaking or dining on a downtown deck, there truly is something for everyone. This blog picks up where the annual Daily News Visitors' Guide leaves off. The guide is published in late April, but that's just when summer fun starts heating up. Throughout the year, we hope to give readers a look at Alaska through local eyes. The blog also serves as a calendar of what's going on, a place to look for some outstanding vacation deals and other cool stuff. We invite your comments and your questions. A couple visitors - 6/8/2008 8:21 pm

A normal day

Wednesday was classic Alaska.

We had visiting friends in town from Michigan. I dropped them off downtown about 10 a.m. with some instructions on some of the highlights. After a full day, Gina and I picked them up about 5:30, and headed directly to Moose’s Tooth. One of my rules for hosting visitors is this: They must have a pizza and beer at Moose’s Tooth.

We got home about 9, and 15 minutes later asked Tyler –- the 20-year-old visiting with his dad –- if he wanted to hike Flattop. Tyler and Rick are headed for some fishing later this week, and it might be his only time to get out for some good hiking. Tyler was game, and by 9:30 we were in the parking lot and headed toward the peak –- about 1.5 miles away.

We got to the top, enjoyed the windy view for a few minutes and headed back down. When we got in the car, it was 11:24. The sun was still up, and we headed home. Just a mile down the road, we came across a little black bear munching on something alongside the road. Tyler got a blurry picture as the bear ran into the woods and we headed on.

A shower and into bed by 12:20 a.m.

Typical.
