Talk Dirt To Me

Do you love to make mud pies, grow a houseplant, eat veggies, or stop to smell the bouquet on your co-workers desk? Everyone enjoys a bit of green growing around him or her and then there are those that are passionate and needy when it comes to dabbling in the dirt. With this blog, we'll try to satisfy those needs and tell you about what's going on with the Anchorage gardening scene. You know, as I finally learned, it's all about the dirt.

Photographer and gardener Fran Durner (fdurner@adn.com) writes the blog.

Mike writes: Stephen Nickel just sent a reminder about this summer's tree tour at UAA:

Wednesday June 25 at 5:30 PM, Pat Leary, UAA Landscaping Horticulture Manager and certified arborist will be leading a tree tour of the UAA. Come learn about the many interesting trees and shrubs that are growing on campus and maybe get a few ideas for your home landscape.

We will be meeting at the bus stop in the west parking lot (the large parking lot on the west end of campus that is on the north east corner of Lake Otis and Providence Drive). The tour will last about an hour and a half, be dressed for the weather and feel free to take notes. Hope to see you there!

Mike again: As you check out trees around campus, take note of the newly twined south side of the Beatrice McDonald building.

Mel Monson, on the UAA horticulture staff, worked with grad student Alex Lyle last week to shore up and train hops vines to climb the building this summer. There are three kinds of hops -- green, golden and purple varieties -- that are established perennials now, and with a little help from the twine will cover one side of the building and be running on the roof by September. The hops plants produce enough flowers to supply one UAA staffer with the makings for home-brewed beer.

Sorry, students and tree-tour takers: There is no beer brewing or drinking on campus.
