This is a new blog dedicated to the general topic of crime and crime prevention in Alaska. We are starting by posting the Alaska State Troopers' daily logs, our own crime-related stories and other relevant items as we come across them. The Daily News encourages community engagement and discussion of issues of crime and criminal justice. Comments are not edited and will be posted immediately. We know that stories about crime often provoke strong reactions, but we insist that you keep your comments on point, use good taste and show courtesy toward other writers. A Fairbanks man was arrested Friday on charges that he used the Internet to sexually entice a child, according to Alaska State Troopers. See the dispatch below out of Fairbanks.

Type: Theft IV

Text: On 6-19-2008 at approximately 0850 hours, AST received a report of
theft of firewood from a Sunset Drive resident. According to the
complainant, people have been stealing firewood from her residence the
past several nights and using the wood for beach fires at the nearby
Refuge Cove beach. An approximate replacement value for the wood has
been estimated at $45 to $50.00, AST investigation continues. Anyone
with information pertaining to a crime should call the Alaska State

Type: Death Investigation-Natural

Text: On 6/20/08, at 0800 hours, AST received a report of a death
onboard the M/V Dawn Princess. Investigation revealed that on 6/19/08,
at 1645 hours, John Lunn, age 62 of St. George, UT, died of an apparent
heart attack while the cruise ship was traveling from Ketchikan to
Juneau. The State Medical Examiner did not request an autopsy be
conducted and the body was released to Alaskan Memorial Park and
Mortuary. Lunn's wife was traveling onboard the cruise ship at the time
of death. No foul play is suspected.

Type: MVC-D

Text: On 06-20-2008 at approximately 1128 hrs, AST responded to the area
of Revilla Road near the Last chance campground for a report of motor
vehicle collision damage only. Investigation showed that 30 year old
Kelly Larsen of Utah was operating a 2005 Jeep owned by Alaska travel
Adventures. Ms. Larsen was traveling in an easterly direction
(outbound) on Revilla Road. As Ms. Larsen approached the intersection
with the Last Chance Campground entrance, a male driver operating a
white Ford truck with a slide in type camper was exiting the campground
and pulled out in front of Larsen's vehicle. Larsen took evasive action
and skidded into the ditch narrowly missing the truck. Larsen was not
injured and reportedly was wearing her seat belt. The driver of the
truck proceeded westbound onto Revilla Road in the opposite direction
did not stop to render aid or to exchange information. An ongoing
investigation will continue; anyone with information pertaining to this
incident or any other crime is asked to call the Alaska State Troopers
at 225-5118, your calls may remain anonymous.

Case number: 08-48466
Type: MVC, DUI, Misconduct Involving a Weapon 4
Text: On 6/19/08 at approximately 2210 hours, the AST South Central DUI
Enforcement Team responded to mile 4 Aryshire Road in Wasilla, for a
report of a motor vehicle collision with injuries. Investigation
revealed that Anca R. Bertus, age 25, of Fairbanks, was driving her 2001
Honda Civic northbound on Aryshire Road when she failed to drive on the
right side of the roadway and collided with a 2001 Dodge truck that was
traveling southbound. The driver of the Dodge Truck was identified as
Matthew A. Seymer, age 23, of Wasilla. Further Investigation revealed
that Seymer was operating his vehicle while under the influence of
alcohol. He also had several firearms in the vehicle. Seymer was
arrested for DUI and Misconduct Involving a Weapon 4th Degree and
remanded to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility where he was held until
released to a sober third party. All occupants in both vehicles reported
wearing their seatbelts and Bertus was transported to the hospital for a
reported broken ankle. Damage to the vehicles is estimated at
approximately $8,000.00.

Type: Warrant Arrest
Text: On 6/20/2008, approx. 0525 hours, Alaska State Troopers contacted
36 yoa Donald C. Bomer of Wasilla walking along Pittman Road near
Peninsula Drive in Wasilla. Bomer was known by AST to have a no bail
warrant for his arrest for failure to appear at arraignment on the
original charge of Harassment in the Second Degree. Bomer was arrested
without incident and transported to MSPT where he was remanded on the no
bail warrant.

Location: Mile 46 Parks Highway
Case number: 08-47996
Type: Driving in Violation of Instruction Permit
Text: On 6/18/08 at approximately 1657 hours, AST stopped a front end
loader on the Parks Highway at mile 46 for impeding traffic. Subsequent
investigation revealed that the driver, Desmond Hight, 16 of Wasilla,
was driving the heavy equipment with an AK instructional permit only.
Hight was given a summons to appear in court for driving in violation of
his instructional permit. Hight was also given a traffic citation for
impeding traffic and was released to his parents who responded to the
scene. The front end loader was also released to his parents.

Type: Assault 4th

Text: On 06-19-08 at approximately 2346 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to an address off of S. Big Lake Road in Big Lake in reference
to an assault. Investigation revealed Keith A Bailey, age 49, of
Anchorage was involved in a verbal altercation that became physical when
Bailey assaulted a male co-worker while working together at that
residence. Bailey was issued a summons to appear at court at a later
date for Assault in the 4th Degree.

Type: MVC-I
Text: On 6-20-2008 at approximately 1000 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to report of a motorcycle accident near mile 7
Wasilla-Fishhook in Wasilla. Angelina Leavitt age 35 of Palmer was
riding her blue 2005 Suzuki motorcycle southbound on Wasilla-Fishhook
near mile 7. Investigation revealed that Leavitt lost control going
into a curve, which resulted in Leavitt colliding with a tree. Leavitt
sustained lacerations to her chin and a possible broken arm. Leavitt
refused to have EMS respond. Leavitt was transported to Quick Care in
Wasilla by her friend for her injuries. Leavitt was wearing a helmet
and proper safety gear. Damage to the motorcycle was estimated to be
approximately $2000.00.

Type: Assault 4

Text: On 6-18-08, at about 2008 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a
report that a 27 YOA Kodiak female had been physically assaulted at Fort
Abercrombie State Park. State Troopers responded and subsequent
investigation revealed that 32 YOA Amanda Pierre Gloria of Kodiak hit
the 27 YOA female with an open can of soda and a hotdog, both of which
caused her physical pain and injury. Gloria was arrested on two counts
of Assault 4th Degree and remanded at the Kodiak Jail. Bail is set at
$1,000.00.

Case Number: 08-48525

Type: Domestic Violence, Interfere with Report of Domestic Violence,
Criminal Mischief

Text: On 6-19-08 at approximately 2330 hours a 39 year old female
resident of Kodiak called Alaska State Troopers to report her 15 year
old son was out of control. Screaming and yelling could be heard by the
dispatcher moments before telephone call was abruptly cut-off. Troopers
responded to the residence and the subsequent investigation revealed
there as an argument over a call phone. In retaliation for not getting
his cell phone the 15 year old assaulted his mother, destroyed home
appliances, disabled the home telephone, and smashed the windshield and
door glass of the victim's 1997 Chevy Blazer with a brick. The victim's
injuries were not life threatening. The total property damage is
estimated at $1,000.00. Initially the defendant had fled the scene
prior to AST arrival. But he returned to the scene of the crime before
AST had departed. He was arrested at that time and shortly thereafter
remanded to the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice. The
defendant is charged with 4th Degree Assault, Interfering with a Report
of Domestic Violence, and 3rd Degree Criminal Mischief.

Location: Kotzebue

Case number: 08-48590

Type: Reckless Driving

Text: On 6/19/08, State Troopers in Kotzebue were on patrol when they
observed a red Honda 4-wheeler driving at a high rate of speed in a
residential area where children were actively playing. State Troopers
and witnesses estimated the driver was traveling at least 20 mph over
the posted speed limit. State Troopers conducted a traffic stop and
contacted the 15 year old driver who said she didn't know the speed
limit and Troopers noted the 4-wheeler did not have a tachometer to
measure her speed. State Troopers released the juvenile to her parents
and notified them that the child was going be charged with reckless
driving and told the juvenile was not to operate the 4-wheeler on the
road system. State Troopers are requesting a summons for the juvenile
to appear in Kotzebue court.

Type: Probation Violation

Text: On 6/19/08, State Troopers in Kotzebue contacted Jeffrey S.
Monroe, 41 yoa, of Kotzebue for a separate incident during which time
State Troopers learned Monroe had been consuming alcohol and was on
probation with conditions that he not consume alcohol. Monroe was
informed that he would be charged with probation violation and released.
State Troopers forwarded charges to the Kotzebue DA's office requesting
a summons for a petition to revoke his probation.

Location: Shemya

Case number: 08-48554

Type: Death Investigation

Text: During the early morning hours of 6-19-08, the F/V Blue Ace, out
of Seattle, reported to the USCG Juneau that one of their crewmen was
having medical problems. The USCG directed the vessel to the USAF Base
on Shemya Is., the nearest medical facility. Later than morning, the
crewman, Kurt E. Henry, age 49, of Westport WA, was dropped off at the
island and taken to the base medical clinic. Approximately three hours
later, Henry died. Subsequent investigation revealed no sign of foul
play. The State Medical Examiner's Office ruled Henry died of natural
causes and released his body to his family. Henry's next of kin in
Washington were notified of his death by officials from the fishing
boat's parent company in Seattle.

Type: Shoplifting

Text: On 6-19-2008 at 2050 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a call
from Fred Meyers West saying that they had two shoplifters in custody.
Anna Somyk, age 21, and Tatiana Kharchenko, age 18, both of Ukraine had
been caught shoplifting. Somky and Kharchenko were arrested and
remanded to FCC for Theft 3.

Type: Theft in the Second Degree and Burglary in the First Degree
Text: On 06-19-08 at 2348 hours, Troopers responded to the Overlook Bar
and Grill in Denali after receiving a report of a theft. Stephanie
Sherman, 23 of Las Vegas Nevada, reported she had $730.00 stolen from
her residence. Further investigation is being conducted.

Type: Assault III
Text: On 06-19-08 at 2226 hours, Erin Johnson, 45 of Fairbanks, was
arrested for Domestic Violence Assault III after he was contacted by
Alaska State Troopers responding to a reported domestic dispute, and the
investigation showed that he had assaulted a female relative in his
home. Johnson was subsequently transported and remanded at the
Fairbanks Correctional Center, where he was held without bail.

Type: Driving Under the Influence, interfering with an arrest
Text: On 06-19-08 at 1844 hours, Roman Retynski, 33 of Fairbanks, was
arrested for Driving Under the Influence after he was contacted by
Alaska State Troopers investigating a citizen reported DUI. During the
arrest, Retynski's girlfriend, Nicole Shultz, 25, of Fairbanks,
attempted to physically stop the arresting trooper, and she was
subsequently arrested for interfering with an arrest. They were both
transported to FCC. Retynski's breath alcohol content was .167%.

Type: Probation Violation

Text: On 6/19/08 at about 2145 hours, AST arrested Jennifer Greenwood,
50, at her home in North Pole after investigating an anonymous tip that
she had violated her probation (felony DUI) by possessing and consuming
alcohol and finding the report to be true. Greenwood was taken to FCC,
where she was held without bail.

Text: On 06/04/08 troopers received a report of copper wire being stolen
from 33 mile loop. The copper wire had an estimated value of $3,120.00.
The case was forwarded to the Fort Greely Police Department and is
currently under investigation.

Type: Misconduct involving controlled substance / Parole Violation

Text: On 6-17-2008, at approximately 1700 hours, Alaska State Troopers
along with officers from Dept. of Corrections, and Adult Probations
contacted Delinda A. Watkins, age 24 of Tok at her residence in Tok.
Investigation revealed that Watkins was in violation of her felony
parole conditions after officers found controlled substance and alcohol
in her possession. Watkins was arrested and transported to the Tok
holding facility. She is charged with misconduct involving a controlled
substance.

Type: Minor Consuming Alcohol X 2
Text: On 6/20/08 at approximately 0345 hrs, AST contacted a 16 year old
female and 17 year old male at the Capt. Cook State Park Camp Ground in
Nikiski for having a camp fire that was too large. The two minors were
found to have been consuming alcohol. The 16 year old female was issued
a USC for Minor Consuming Alcohol 1st offense and released to her
guardian. The 17 year male was issued a USC for Minor Consuming Alcohol
2nd offense and released to his parent.

Type: Burglary

Text: On June 20, 2008 at approximately 0400 hours Alaska State Troopers
responded to the Cooper Landing School at the report of a burlary in
progress. Investigation revlead that two adult males entered the
school by forcing their way through a window they broke. The males were
confronted by several individuals who were residing in the school
lawfully. The males fled the area and no itmes from the school were
taken. Damage to the window is estimated at $1000. Anyone with
information about this burglary is encouraged to contact the Alaska
State Troopers in Seward or Soldtona.

Text: On 6-15-08, Dutch Harbor Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted Edwin
L. Gomez (28 YOA) of Unalaska, who was observed sport fishing along
Illiuliuk Bay, in Unalaska. Gomez was discovered to be fishing without
a 2008 sport fishing license and was issued a citation for Sport Fishing
without a License in Possession. Bail was set at $210.00 for the
Unalaska District Court.

Text: On 6-19-08, Dutch Harbor AWT issued two citations to Joseph H.
Patron, age 58 of Riverbank, Ca., for omitting a material fact and/or
obtaining a Subsistence King/Tanner Crab Permit and Subsistence Salmon
Fishing permit without meeting Alaska residency requirements. Bail was
set at $310.00 for each citation in the Unalaska District Court.

Type: Boating Safety/Subsistence Fishing:

Text: On 6-19-08, while on a Lower Yukon River patrol via state float
plane, Alaska Wildlife Troopers from St. Mary's took the following
enforcement action. AWT Troopers issued a citation to Gordon Westlock
Jr., age 26 of Alakanuk, and Charlie Sage, age 53 of Alakanuk, for
failing to have a PFD. James Adams, age 34 of Sheldon's Point was
issued a summons for subsistence fishing during a closed period.
Matthew Murphy, age 38 of Sheldon's Point, was arrested for DUI and
transported to St. Mary's.

Type: Unlawful possession of commercial Dungeness crab
Text: On 6/20/08, Juneau AWT cited James R. Jensen, age 54, of Juneau,
for unlawfully possessing under-size commercial caught Dungeness crab
during a delivery at Taku Smokeries. Jensen is the CFEC shellfish
permit holder of fishing vessel Fly-By-Night. Arraignment is scheduled
for July 3rd, 2008, in Juneau District Court.

Type: Arrest - Online Enticement of a Minor
Text: On 6/20/08, Thomaslee Allen, age 26, of Fairbanks was arrested by
members of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation's Child Abuse
Investigation unit. Allen had been under investigation for online
activities and was recently indicted on charges of Online Enticement of
a Minor and Distribution of Indecent Material to a Minor. He was
remanded at Fairbanks Correctional Center with bail set at $10,000 plus
court approved third party custodian.

The Fairbanks-area Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU) is comprised of
members of the Alaska State Troopers and the University of Alaska,
Fairbanks Police Department. Their primary activities are the
investigation of crimes involving child victims.
