Talk Dirt To Me

Do you love to make mud pies, grow a houseplant, eat veggies, or stop to smell the bouquet on your co-workers desk? Everyone enjoys a bit of green growing around him or her and then there are those that are passionate and needy when it comes to dabbling in the dirt. With this blog, we'll try to satisfy those needs and tell you about what's going on with the Anchorage gardening scene. You know, as I finally learned, it's all about the dirt.

Photographer and gardener Fran Durner (fdurner@adn.com) writes the blog.

The Anchorage Cooperative Weed Management Area will be welcoming Governor Sarah Palin to the Weeds Fair at Lidia Selkregg Chalet in Russian Jack Springs Park on Tuesday June 17th from 6-8 PM. This marks the start of the invasive weeds season and the Municipal Parks and Recreation Citizen Weeds Warriors program.

Governor Palin will also be signing House Bill 330 into law at the event, a bill to create a position for an invasive weeds coordinator who will be charged with developing a statewide program to address the threat Alaska’s economy, ecology and environment.

While at the Weeds Fair, Governor Palin will unveil the logo for the newly formed Anchorage Cooperative Weed Management Area – a group of federal, state and local agencies and land managers who are joining to combine resources, ideas and information to protect Alaska’s resources from invasive weeds.

There will be a mini weeds ID workshop, a weeds scavenger hunt, refreshments, games and prizes. Doors will open at 5:30 pm. The Governor’s appearance will start at 6 PM.Invasive weeds logoInvasive weeds logo

Wow.... what a great time at the CANWIN event. We're voting for Lori and Troy to be King and Queen Weed Warrior..... Thanks to them, there will be an avenue to take to make sure invasives don't make their way into our stores and nurseries.... Yahoo... Yippeeeee.... We have the legislation signed and in place!!! We are so proud of the Zaumseil's and their counterparts!!! Nickel LaFleur & Kathleen Douglass
