Letter writers, beware the typo. Believe me, this is the voice of experience speaking. That stray keystroke and the failure to double-check can lead to sentences like this, wherein an Anchorage woman writes of her support for a legislative candidate:

"... I bed you well and good luck."

bicycle riders on city streets

As I was driving to work today carefully watching the car ahead of me. A pickup truck approaching the intersection from a side street caught my eye as it was aproaching rather quickly. I slid my foot over to the brake as I prepared to take action in case the truck did not stop. However the truck did manage to stop and after riding the brake for a moment I prepared to resume to the posted speed limit, Which by the way is 50 MPH, when out of nowhere this guy on a mountain bike is riding right in the street. I crammed the brake down in panic as my coffee flew from it's holder and splatterd all over the dash board. Was this person confused? there was a sidewalk less than 5 feet from where he was riding. I'm not sure about the laws on riding on the sidewalk but I see lots of poeple doing it. I would take the risk of a ticket for riding on the sidewalk over getting ran over by a car anyday. So anyway I get past this guy by switching lanes then switched back to my desired lane feeling lucky to have avoided such a dangerous situation. As I approached the next Intersection the light changed from green to yellow, then red. I sat patiently waiting for the light to change. The guy on the bicycle came riding past me on the right between me and the curb. When he got to the intersection he just rode over onto the crosswalk and continued down the street. So now he is once again right in front of me. I would like to know why you would do such a foolish and dangerous thing.

Jerry you don't

have to live in Anchorage for that to happen....
Bicylist seems to have either a death wish, or do not believe they need to follow the "rules of the road" as car drivers have to.... They seem to have an elist attitude about themselves as being far above those who do not have their holyerthanthou energetic athelitic ability.... I don't know the Alaskan law, but most states say the rules for automotives ARE the same for pedal power....THE SAME....
Those cyclist who belong to cycle clubs and like to practice are the worst yet.... Neighborhoods, where I live now , who experience their "practicing for races" have had to call the police, who set and for them to show their "stuff" and will give every one of them traffic tickets.... $80 plus tickets at that.... I wittness one such "bust" .... Did my lil ole heart good...... hehehehe
