Strong bodies: fitness & health

This blog will cover all city and statewide bodybuilding competitions and the out-of-state guest posers. Weight-loss success stories from local people, features/bios on bodybuilding, fitness and figure competitors, coverage of fad diets. Nutritious recipes and reviews on local gyms and health food stores. I would also like to cover Adult/Childhood Obesity in America and specifically,Alaska. Weight-lifting techniques/safety as well as the benefits for women. This is just a general idea, as the blog will be constantly evolving.

Ladies are you lifting?

Many women don't realize the benefits of lifting weights and will often shy away from the idea altogether with the thought that they will end up looking like a bulging bodybuilder. This is a HUGE misconception ladies.

First of all, women do not have near the testosterone levels that men have, therefore it's virtually impossible to build muscle mass the way the average man can. Secondly, it can take years of focused and consistent effort for a female bodybuilder to put on muscle mass drug free. That's if she is eating properly to facilitate muscle growth.

So now that a few pesky myths are out of the way, let's get onto the good stuff. Lifting weights, especially free weights, is practically unheard of for women in the mainstream gym crowd these days. Most people will gravitate like flies to a light bulb towards the fancy machines, while the free weight rack builds cobwebs. Don't let this atrocity happen in your gym!

I have found that some women don't feel comfortable picking up a free weight and are even more uncomfortable doing anything in front of anyone else WITH that free-weight. So, I suggest finding a trainer to show you the proper way to use everything in the gym- even the neglected free weights, or pick up a magazine where you can learn the proper lifting techniques on your own. The library is also a great place to discover new information on this subject and our very own Loussac has a great assortment of literature on weight-lifting and fitness.

Some important things to consider for you health:

* Weight-lifting helps strenghten bones as well as muscles, tendons and ligaments. It is never too late to adopt a weight-lfiting program and may even ward off Osteoporosis in women.

* Weight-lifting will help build muscle, which in turn will help boost your metabolism even at rest.

* Weight-lifing builds confidence in both men and women. As you learn the proper form, challenge yourself with new exercises and increase the weight you lift- self-esteem skyrockets, especially as you start to see results.

* Safely hoisting around weights is a great stress-reliever. So the next time you are bummed, don't reach for the potato chips, get to the gym fast!

* Weight-lifting and exercise in general can reverse the affects of aging and increase your vitality while decreasing low back pain and other aches and pains by improving circulation throughout the body.

I could go on and on with the benefits but I think you get the picture. The bottom line is you will discover a strong new YOU when you begin a weight-lifting program and upon doing so, you will realize while holding those dumbbells in your hand, that you really do have the control in creating the body you have always wanted.

I'm going to go workout now!

Holy free weight workout, batman!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE to lift weights. There is nothing like the feeling after you have had a good work out with free weights. Your blood pumps more oxygenated healthy blood to those muscles that might not have gotten all the benefit in your cardio workout. And, there is nothing like the look of a dumb guy realizing you actually know what you are doing with those free weights!
