And The Kelly Cup Goes To...Cincy

The Cincinnati Cyclones completed their domination of the ECHL on Thursday night with a 3-1 win over the visiting Las Vegas Wranglers in Game 6 to seize the Kelly Cup.

Cincy bagged a couple of goals in the opening seven minutes of the third period to earn breathing room.

The Cyclones, who won a league-best 55 games in the regular season and racked up 115 points, won the series 4-2. They became the first team from the American Conference (basically teams in the East and South) to hoist the Cup since the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies in 2003. (OK, technically, the Bullies played in what was then known as the Northeast Division of the Northern Conference). In any event, that Bullies team included former Alaska Aces Peter Metcalf and Joe Talbot, and a forward named Jade Galbraith, who played at UAA for about a weekend.

Las Vegas' only goal Thursday came with an assist by defenseman Jason Krischuk of Anchorage. Las Vegas, you puckheads no doubt recall, eliminated the Aces in the second round.

With the Kelly Cup decided Thursday and the NHL's Stanley Cup decided Wednesday, the only hardware out there still to be snagged in North American pro hockey is the American Hockey League's Calder Cup. The Chicago Wolves, who include winger Joey Crabb of Anchorage, own a 3-0 lead entering tonight's Game 4 on the road against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, who include former Aces sniper Chris Minard and foward Tim Wallace of Anchorage.
