I called the visitor's center in Seward and she told me that there are 3 hot spots for fishing right now for silvers. 4th of July creek which past the Springcreek jail facility, down by the campgrounds (behind the public restroom building) in that little cove and by the waterfall that is down a ways on a dirt road past the Sealife center. All areas can be fished from the beach. The silvers from Seward put the silvers to shame that come out of ship creek or bird creek. There is also good fishing in Whittier right to your left when you come out of the tunnel. You can park your car parallel to the rail road tracks (down by the rock cliff and the first little bridge)and make your way down the boulders to the water and use eggs or herring and a bobber. Make sure your bait is about 3-4 feet from your bobber or adjust per what the tide is running so your bait doesn't hit bottom. Whittier silvers put up a good fight and dont take long to hit your bait once you cast it in. I use the whole herring strung up on the Gamatsu double hook clear leaders. 2 hooks are better than one with these silvers!
178-pounder leads? Seems like someone oughta be able to top that before the end of the month when the derby ends. If you're going, get a ticket. It's not mentioned in the press relase at the bottom of this post, but the biggest daily derby fish wins a 2009 charter trip. Which means a $10 ticket could cover your trip next year.

“Fish On!” for Seward Halibut Anglers
Seward, Alaska, June 23, 2008—Christopher Lafe’s 178.0-pound halibut maintains the lead in the 2008 Seward Halibut Tournament. Caught aboard Glacier Fishing Charters’ Noble Eagle on June 12th, the catch is a contender for $10,000 in winnings to Mr. Lafe, a resident of Wasilla, Alaska.
The sunshine and warmer temperatures attracted many anglers last week – while those huge fish continued to break line and strip bait. Amid the great “ones that got away” stories, second place was grabbed by Jared Funk, of Auburn, New York, with a 173.7-pound fish caught on June 16th aboard Crackerjack Sportfishing Charters’ Crackerjack Voyager. Jared’s humdinger bumps Ray Johnston, of Dallas, Texas, to third place with his 165.2-pound fish caught on June 12th aboard Alaskan Fishing Adventures’ Tia Rose.
The Seward Charter Boat Association and Seward Chamber of Commerce join in thanking our Lead Sponsor, FedEx and the many other generous contributors. Thanks to their support, the angler with the heaviest fish overall will win $10,000, 2nd place $5,000, and 3rd place, $2,500. In addition, the angler bringing in the heaviest fish each day wins a seat on a June 2009 Seward-based halibut charter.
For daily updates, see the Seward Chamber of Commerce website, www.seward.com.
Running the entire month of June, the 2008 Seward Halibut Tournament highlights the fishing opportunities in Resurrection Bay waters and beyond. Daily tickets are $10, or three days for $25.

Bigger fish are out there --
Last year, the winner was a 251-pounder and the third-place fish (184-pounder) would have topped this year's leader...
