Alaska Politics

This is the place to talk about Alaska politics -- state, local, national. Public life in the Last Frontier may never have been more interesting than right now -- the broad and still-evolving corruption investigation, a big election, a popular governor, powerful members of Congress under scrutiny, and the usual hardball Alaska politics. Come here for news, tidbits and information, and join the discussion. Keep your comments civil and on point. Avoid personal attacks. Do not use profanity. Posts that violate the Terms of Use will be deleted. Repeat offenders will be banned.

Young's challengers

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage --

All the candidates running for Don Young's seat in the U.S. House will participate in a forum tonight sponsored by the Hispanic Affairs Council of Alaska.

But Young himself won't be a part of it. He was supposed to take part by teleconference from Washington. D.C. but canceled at the last minute. Organizers received an email this morning saying Young has a scheduling conflict. I've got a call into Young's campaign spokesman asking what the conflict is.

Democrats Diane Benson and Ethan Berkowitz will be there. So will Republicans Sean Parnell and Gabrielle LeDoux. It starts at 5 p.m. at the Mountain View Community Center (315 North Price Street) and is open to the general public.

Parnell

Parnell still looks like a swamp rat to me

I was there on Friday and i was surprised

by how uncomfortable Parnell looked. Conversely I thought LeDoux came off the strongest. I have known who she is for a while as I had lived in Kodiak for many years but her performance was the best out of all four speakers (although as an R, not that I really care about Benson and Berkowitz)

Don Young Humors Me

And if he thinks he has a chance of being re-elected by the good (and finally somewhat awake) people of Alaska, he is highly delusional! Maybe if Parnell and Berkowitz were abducted by aliens. Yeah, that's his best chance. The aliens would probably have to grab Benson too. (LeDoux, not so much.) DON YOUNG: YOU COULD STILL RETIRE WITH A SCRAP OF DIGNITY, if you bowed out of the race. Not that I want you to at this point. I'm enjoying the show too much!

QQ

So sad that Rep. Young couldn't find time at 9:00 p.m. on a Friday night to debate the issues.

Like most other seventy-five year old men, I'm sure his Friday nights in the swinging capital city are quite busy.

There's no way he cancelled out of fear of being asked a tough question. He's totally not a big chicken.
