Cool Moms and Cool Cocktails

Mother's Day is Sunday and nothing says "I love you, Mom" like a fancy cocktail or classy meal. Here are some sweet suggestions to show the woman who brought you into this world that you truly care.
First, if you haven't planned anything yet, take her to brunch. Several restaurants are providing a prix fix buffet for moms and guests. The Anchor Pub & Club (712 W. Fourth Ave., 677-7979), Anchorage Senior Center (1300 E. 19th Ave., 258-7823), Lone Star Steakhouse (4810 C St., 562-7827), Sea Galley Restaurant (4101 Credit Union Drive, 563-3520) and Villa Nova (5121 Arctic Blvd., Suite 1, 561-1660) are a few, but wherever you decide to dine make sure to call ahead to check on buffet prices and times.
I recommend the Millennium Alaska Hotel & Bar's buffet (4800 Spenard Road, 243-2300), because champagne is included in the price ($39.95) and that will make mom happy.
Your second option is to make your mom a delectable breakfast or brunch at home (hers or yours). This can work well - most moms tear up at the idea that you'd attempt to make toast, much less scrambled eggs, just for them. If you stay at home, here are some girly and glamorous drink recipes from cocktails.about.com that will give your mom bragging material to last until next year.
Coriandrum
INGREDIENTS:
2 oz Square One Organic Vodka
1/4 oz Cinzano Bianco Vermouth
splash of coriander nectar (recipe below)
splash of orange bitters
coriander seeds for garnish
lemon twist for garnish
PREPARATION:
Pour the vodka, vermouth, nectar and bitters into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake for 30 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a few coriander seeds and lemon twist.
Tea-Tini
INGREDIENTS:
1 3/4 oz vodka
1 oz sweet iced tea
1/4 oz fresh lemon juice
lemon wedge for garnish
PREPARATION:
Pour the ingredients into a shaker with ice cubes. Shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass rimmed with sugar. Garnish with the lemon wedge.
And, my personal favorite is the Kir Royale. It's easy, involves just two ingredients, and looks and tastes great. Buy a bottle of champagne and some creme de cassis; pour champagne until the glass is three-quarters full, then add a tiny splash of the creme de cassis on top. For a twist, get some fresh raspberries or strawberries and drop one or two in the champagne glass after preparation.
