Alaska Politics

This is the place for news on Alaska politics -- state, local and national. Public life in the Last Frontier may never have been more interesting than right now -- the broad and still-evolving corruption investigation, a new governor, powerful members of Congress under scrutiny, and the usual hardball politics on the state, national and local levels. Come here for the latest news and join the discussion. Keep your comments civil and on point. Avoid personal attacks. Do not use profanity. Posts that violate the Terms of Use will be deleted. From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage --

Former Anchorage Mayor George Wuerch has resigned as chairman of the Knik Arm Bridge and Toll Authority.

Why?

Well, Wuerch hasn’t returned my calls for the past week so he obviously doesn’t want to say. I’ll have to check around elsewhere.

You can read his resignation letter here but it’s not very enlightening.

Wuerch has been chairman of the agency since right after then-Gov. Frank Murkowski and the Legislature created it in 2003 to plan for construction of the bridge and how to pay for it.

Terrible News!

This is awful. No George Wuerch to lead KABATA? He was a big ace in the hole for bridge opponents.

Crud. I hope they don't get someone competent in there.

How about

this bridge being an example of Alaska's finest in DC?

Even their brethren stripped away the earmarks knowing the fiasco. Murky was still able to get the GOB network fat "retirement" salaries where they go and have 4 hour lunch meetings discussing their next vacation.

There has never been a viable plan.

The DY earmark attempt was another example of pure cronyism on his part. Taking highway dollars already heading to the state and placing a top priority status to the project ahead of essential state priorities was another get rich scheme for the CBC and landholders across the knik arm.

Ask Valley residents if they'd like to see a better planned city grid than the cluster of twists and turns where they routinely clock others while driving on.

Pay dispute?

After all, the people in the KABATA hierarchy are being paid a mere pittance, and are accomplishing incredible feats...

  May 6, 2008 - 6:43pm | akgen

well I heard it was one of two possible reasons...

- he heard about the pay given to Ulmer at the college and wondered why he ...
- he is scared of the mighty Cook Inlet Beluga and can't see within himself to work towards a bridge that might expose others to the same fear.
