Local Picked In WHL Bantam Draft

For whatever it's worth -- and, really, the blog has no idea how much it is -- Anchorage winger Austin Wuthrich was selected by the Everett Silvertips in the Western Hockey League bantam draft on Thursday.

One, we're really not that well versed in the WHL, one of three Canadian-based major junior leagues that supply a ton of eventual NHLers. Two, don't know Austin, so certainly don't know whether he's planning on going the college route that most Alaskans choose, or going the WHL route, which worked so nicely for Scott Gomez and Brandon Dubinsky, the two New York Rangers center from Anchorage. Three, Austin is 14 (he turns 15 in August), so presumably he and his family don't yet have his future totally mapped out.

In any event, congrats to Austin, who this season earned 24-45--69 totals in 45 games with the Alaska All Stars bantam A club.

His 12-round selection, 224th out of 227 kids drafted, leads one to believe Everett officials rate him as someone who will be a tough sell to convince to go the WHL route.

The other Alaskan drafted was center Jared Linnell of North Pole, who was taken in the 10th round, 214th, by the Prince George Cougars. Jared's old man, Derek, played for UAF, where one of his teammates was Wade Klippenstein, currently assistant coach and assistant general manager in Prince George. Linnell played for North Pole High and the Arctic Lions.
