2 More Recruits For UAA

Looks like the UAA Seawolves have picked up a couple more recruits in two Canadian forwards.

Jake Portwood, a 6-foot-3, 200-pounder from the Brooks Bandits of the Alberta Junior Hockey League -- that's the junior team of former UAA sniper and current NHLer Curtis Glencross -- is a 19-year-old with modest stats, for whatever that's worth. He earned 14-26--40 totals in 60 games for a team that went 23-30-9. Pencil Portwood in for next season, since he turns 20 early next season.

The other recruit is Matthew Bailey of the Neepawa Natives in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He played for a bad team (16-40-6) and put up just 13-15--28 totals in 56 games, but it's his age that's most intriguing. He turned 17 earlier this month, which would seem to make him a recruit for 2009-10 at the earliest, but who knows? On the face of it, perhaps this is one of those ahead-of-the-curve recruiting moves by UAA coach Dave Shyiak -- you know, get a guy's commitment before he gets older, starts to produce and gets offers from bigger and better programs.

Bailey is one to follow ...

Bailey just turned 17 on April 5th so he'll be one to watch most probably for two more years in juniors; although if he really "tears it up" next season he could possibly be ready for the WCHA. Time will tell but I'd guess most likely he'll come for the 10/11 season. True freshman in the WCHA are the exception rather than the rule.

He's got good size for a 17yo at 6'1" 184lbs. He had 13g/15a in his this (his first full) year of juniors. A "nice" prospect that the Seawolf staff must feel sure will develop.

Sorry ... you updated while I was typing all that. LOL.
