This is a new blog dedicated to the general topic of crime and crime prevention in Alaska. We are starting by posting the Alaska State Troopers' daily logs, our own crime-related stories and other relevant items as we come across them. The Daily News encourages community engagement and discussion of issues of crime and criminal justice. Comments are not edited and will be posted immediately. Troopers have arrested a man on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend in Akiachak. See the dispatch below--

Type: Warrant Arrest
Text: On 4-27-08 at 2110 hours the Alaska State Troopers contacted Kori
Pinnow (23 YOA of Wasilla) during a traffic stop. Investigation revealed
that Pinnow had a $250.00 warrant for his arrest, original charge of
driving with a suspended license. Pinnow was arrested and booked at the
Mat Su Pre Trial Facility.

Case number: 08-31625
Type: DWLS
Text: On 4-27-08 at 1935 hours the Alaska State Troopers stopped Desirae
Butcher (25 YOA of Wasilla) while driving a 1998 Dodge sedan for
speeding 70/55 MPH zone near mile 51 Glenn Highway. Investigation
revealed that Butcher was driving with a suspended license. Butcher was
issued a summons and released. Butcher was also issued a citation for
speeding and for no insurance.

Case number: 08-31614

Type: Burglary/Theft

Text: On 4-27-08 at approximately 2150 hours, AST responded to a
reported Burglary to a residence on Muffin Street. Investigation
revealed that the residence was entered through an unlocked window.
Jewelry, an IPOD, Play Station II, camera and many other miscellaneous
items were taken from the residence. The residence was not occupied at
the time of the Burglary. Anyone with information regarding this

Case number: 08-31488

Type: DUI / DWLR

Text: On 4-27-08, at approximately 1000 hours, Alaska State Troopers
arrested Jodi Mahle, age 29 of Houston for DUI. Troopers contacted Mahle
while responding to a report of a disturbance on Armstrong Road.
Investigation determined Mahle was under the influence, impaired and had
operated a motor vehicle. A check of Mahle's driving record revealed
that her license was revoked. Mahle was transported to the Matsu
Pretrial Facility and remanded into their custody. Bail was set at
$2500.

Type: DWLS
Text: On 4/28/08 at approximately 0020 hours the AST South Central DUI
Enforcement Team stopped a vehicle near the intersection of Lucille St.
and Scheelite Dr. in Wasilla for an equipment violation. The operator
was identified as Amber R. Cornell, age 21, of Palmer. Cornell was
found to be operating the vehicle with a suspended drivers license.
Cornell was issued a summons to appear in the Palmer Court on the charge
of DWLS and released at the scene.

Text: On 4/27/08 at approximately 2214 hours, the AST South Central DUI
Enforcement Team stopped a vehicle for speeding at mile 5 of Knik Goose
Bay Rd., in Wasilla. The driver, identified as Randy Kamp Mann, age 43,
of Palmer, was found to be operating the vehicle with a suspended
driver's license. Kamp Mann was issued a summons to appear in the
Palmer Court on the charge of DWLS and released at the scene.

Case number: 08-31417
Type: Assault IV x 6, Interfering with Report of DV Crime, Criminal
Mischief IV, Criminal Trespass I, Disorderly Conduct.
Text: On 04-26-08 at approximately 1830 hours, Alaska State Troopers in
Kotzebue received a report of a disturbance at a residence in the
Village of Selawik. Troopers responded to investigate. The
investigation revealed that Derek Sheldon, age 27, of Noorvik, forced
his way into a local residence and assaulted six people inside the
residence including two family members. He also attempted to prevent
the crimes from being reported. Sheldon was placed under arrest and
transported to the Kotzebue Regional Jail where he was held without bail
pending arraignment.

Type: Report of Harm, Endangering the Welfare of a Child-Unfounded
Text: On 04-25-08 at approximately 2300 hours, Alaska State Troopers in
Kotzebue received information that a four year old child had fallen from
a second story apartment window in the Village of Selawik. Troopers
notified OCS and responded to investigate. The child suffered a broken
leg and was sent to Anchorage for treatment. The investigation
determined there was no criminal act on the part of the parent.

Type: Assault IV-DV
Text: On 4/27/08 at approximately 1740 hours, Alaska State Troopers in
Kotzebue received a report of an assault in the village of Kivalina.
Troopers chartered an aircraft to the village and contacted the suspect
in his residence. Investigation revealed that Edward F. Adams, age 18
of Kivalina, had assaulted a family member during an argument earlier in
the day. Adams was placed under arrest for DV Assault in the Fourth
Degree. Adams was transported to the Kotzebue Regional Jail Facility
and remanded without bail.

Type: Murder in the First Degree

Text: On 4-24-08 at about 2300 hours Bethel AST was notified of a
shooting that had occurred in the village of Akiachak. Investigation
revealed that Moses T. Charles 53 yao of Akiachak had shot his
girlfriend Agnus Williams 44 yoa of Akiakchak. Investigation resulted
in the arrest of Charles for murder in the first degree and he
transported to YKCC in Bethel on 4-25-08 and booked.

Case number: 08-31320
Type: Theft in the Second Degree
Text: On 04-26-08 at approximately 1352 hours, Alaska State Troopers
received a report that a brand new 3,000 foot spool of #4 copper wire
was taken from a property in North Pole. Investigation revealed that
the wire, valued at approximately $3,500.00, was removed from the
property sometime between 4-25-08 at 2200 hours and 4-26-08 at 0700
hours. Investigation is continuing.

Type: Criminal Mischief III

Text: On 4-22-08 at 1158 hrs, Troopers received a report of vandalism
near mile 267 Richardson Highway. Investigation revealed that unknown
person(s) spray painted a white pick up truck with blue paint. Estimated
value of the damage is $1000.00. Investigation continues.

Location: Delta Junction

Case number: 08-30607

Type: Motor Vehicle Collision

Text: On 4-24-08 at 0855 hrs, Troopers received a report of a motor
vehicle collision at mile 1420 Alaska Highway. Investigation revealed
that Stephen Augustin, 23, of Delta Junction was traveling southbound on
the Alaska Highway driving a 1990 pick up truck when a moose entered the
roadway. Augustin collided with the moose. Augustin was wearing his
seatbelt and received no injuries. The moose was salvaged by a local
charity.

Type: Stop Arm Violation

Text: On 4-24-08 at 1547 hrs, Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a
1990 Ford Focus for Failure to Stop for School Bus with Flashing Red
Lights. Investigation revealed that Dawn Willard, 28, of Delta Junction
was driving a 1990 Ford Focus turning onto Nistler Road and failed to
stop for a school bus while its red lights were flashing and its stop
arm was extended. Willard was issued a summons to appear at court for
Failure to Stop for School Bus with Flashing Red Lights and issued a
citation for Proof of Insurance to be Carried and exhibited on Demand.

Type: Fail to register as a sex offender 2nd degree

Text: On 4-22-08, Troopers conducted an investigation into the
registration information provided by sex offenders listed in the Delta
Junction patrol area. The investigation revealed Kenneth C. Pitka 75,
of Fairbanks failed to update his employment status with the Sex
Offender Registry. Pitka reported he is working at Ft. Greely. A check
with his employer showed he has not worked at Ft. Greely for months. A
summons for failing to register as a sex offender in the second degree
has been issued for Pitka.

age 28 of Soldotna near mile 22 of the Spur Hwy in Nikiski for an
equipment violation. Don Morse was subsequently issued a USC for
Operating a Motor Vehicle without Liability Insurance.

AK Wildlife Troopers

Location: Valdez

Case number: 08-30839

Type: SAR

Text: On 4-24-08, at 2030 hours, the Valdez Troopers received a report
of two juveniles stranded on Hogback Ridge, in Valdez. The juveniles
reported, on a cell phone, that they were snowmachining on Hogback
(popular snowmachine recreational area within the city limits of
Valdez), when the fog came in and they became disoriented. They advised
they were unable to ride back to Valdez due to the visibility and
needed assistance. The Valdez Snowmobile Club responded to the scene to
assist with the search. A party of six, including Trooper Beck,
departed on snowmachines and found the two juveniles at 2236 hours.
Both reported to be in good health, except a little cold. The party
descended
Hogback Ridge and returned safely. No SAR funds expended.
