Around The Rinks (ECHL, NHL, AHL)

The Las Vegas Wranglers certainly made their point Friday night.

Wranglers 8, Alaska Aces 0: pretty much says it all. Game 2 is Saturday night in Vegas.

Elsewhere in the ECHL, there was another playoff ambush. Utah marched into Victoria and won the opener 6-0 behind 31 saves and a second postseason shutout from former UAA Seawolves goaltender Nathan Lawson.

Also in the ECHL, the Texas Wildcatters, they of the 115 regular-season points, were eliminated in a decisive Game 5, 4-1 by the Columbia Inferno. One of Columbia's alternate captains is former Aces defenseman Patrick Wellar.

In the NHL, New York Rangers center Scott Gomez of Anchorage bagged a game-tying third-period goal, but his crew blew a 3-0 lead and lost the series opener 5-4 at Pittsburgh. Gomez logged 20:30 of ice time and his 10 wins on 16 face-offs was the best mark of the game on either side. Rangers rookie center Brandon Dubinsky was held without a point and was -2 with four shots on goal in 18:04. Also, San Jose Sharks defenseman Matt Carle of Anchorage earned an assist and a +1 rating with three shots in 15:01 of ice in a 3-2 OT loss to Dallas.

In the American Hockey League, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, who feature former Aces sniper Chris Minard and forward Tim Wallace of Anchorage, eliminated Hershey with a 7-3 in Game 5 of the best-of-7 series. Minard bagged his fifth goal of the playoffs, which ties him for first on the circuit, and Wallace added a helper.
