Talk Dirt To Me

Do you love to make mud pies, grow a houseplant, eat veggies, or stop to smell the bouquet on your co-workers desk? Everyone enjoys a bit of green growing around him or her and then there are those that are passionate and needy when it comes to dabbling in the dirt. With this blog, we'll try to satisfy those needs and tell you about what's going on with the Anchorage gardening scene. You know, as I finally learned, it's all about the dirt.

The Alaska Rock Garden Society presents: "Plant Hunting on the Roof of the World (Tibet)," by visiting lecturer and plant explorer Harry Jans of the Netherlands. Saturday, April 26, at 7:30pm at the Alaska Pacific University Grant Hall Lecture Room. $10. Jans will present a lecture in Homer on Thursday, April 24, at 7pm at the Bidarka Inn, sponsored by the Homer Garden Club. And Jans will also speak in MatSu on Monday, April 28th, at 7pm at the Fred and Sara Machatanz Bldg at MatSu College.

Photo by Teena Garay.Teena Garay spoke recently to the Alaska Rock Garden Society about the success of plants grown from seed gathered on a trip to high altitudes in China in 2000 and also about some uncommon plants she grows in her own garden in Homer.

From mid-September until mid-October of 2000, nine people from the Alaska Rock Garden Society, including Teena and current president Jaime Rodriguez, mounted an ambitious expedition to collect seed in the mountainous regions of China. A full year of planning went into the project before they took off with permits and regulations in hand. Dan Hinkley of Heronswood Nursery in Washington State was the group’s guide.

Photo by Teena Garay.Flying into Kunming in Southern China, they were joined by a team of three botanists from Kunming Botanical Gardens who acted as their local guides. The Chinese botanists raise money for their garden by providing services to visiting horticultural groups.

Photo by Fran DurnerThen the group flew to Zhongdian on the Himalayan Plateau, at 11,000 ft, and did day trips by bus or short overnights in different villages from there. The highest altitude they reached was at 15,000 ft near the Tibetan and Szechwan borders. The group collected seed just about every day of the trip. Hundreds of different species were collected and Garay kept about forty to grow. About half of those proved hardy in our climate.

Most places they visited had been botanized before by institutional expeditions or they followed the trail of ages old expeditions only known about by written reports.

There were some memorable moments. In the mountains of Zhongdian, Garay saw little old women bent over with bundles of rodgersia on their backs that they were harvesting to feed their yaks. She also heard a woman singing and never saw her. “That was magical,” she said.

Photo by Teena GarayMembers of the expedition had to put up $2,000 each, of their own money and they sold future shares in seed to raise additional capital, raising around $28K from seed sales all over the world. The expedition cost a total of between $40K – $50K. Luckily, the group broke even.

The Alaska Rock Garden Society is hoping to mount another seed collecting expedition in the future to areas in Turkey and the Caucuses, Northern Mongolia or the Georgian Republic or even to North Korea, which has not been botanized in 50 years.Another uncommen plant in Garay's garden is Rheum palmatum var. tanguticum, an ornamental rhubarb with red foliage in the spring and a flower reminiscent of astilbe. Permits

We had to have an Import Permit from the USDA. Our Chinese hosts from the Kunming Botanical Garden took care of the export permits on the Chinese side. There were regulations to be followed, both for how to prepare the seed, and what seed was allowed to be imported. The seed had to be properly cleaned and dried – no fruity pulp allowed, no dirt or other plant material. Each type of seed was labeled with the latin botanical name and given an accession number. The permits came with special labels that went both inside and outside the shipping container. A printed list of each species collected was included in the box. There were restrictions on some things (Oak, Berberis, Bamboo, etc.), and we got a special permit to allow some prohibited seed to be brought in and grown under quarantine. None of that material germinated or survived. Once everything was properly labeled and packaged, it was shipped to a USDA Inspection office. There, it would be opened and inspected. Anything found unsatisfactory would be pulled. If too many items were not proper, the whole shipment could be refused. Things that passed would be resealed and forwarded to our address in Anchorage. We followed the instructions to the letter, and the package actually arrived at the airport before we did. Everything on our list made it through.
