Carle Joins The Rush Of Alaskans To NHL's 2nd Round

With the San Jose Sharks' 5-3 elimination of Calgary in Tuesday night's Game 7 of the opening-round playoff series, Sharks defenseman Matt Carle joined the rush of Alaskans into the second round of the NHL's Stanley Cup playoffs.

Carle logged just 9:51 of ice time Tuesday, but went +1. He played in six of the seven series games. No points for him, but he earned a +2 rating. San Jose moves on to play Dallas beginning Friday.

Already qualified for the second round were four other Alaskans.

Centers Scott Gomez and Brandon Dubinsky of Anchorage and the New York Rangers will face the Pittsburgh Penguins, who include backup goaltender Ty Conklin of Anchorage, in a series that opens Friday.

Gomez earned 3-4--7 and +5 totals in New York's five-game dismissal of his old team, the New Jersey Devils. Dubinsky, the ever-burgeoning rookie -- the kid just keeps getting better and better -- bagged 3-3--6 and +3 totals. Conklin served as backup to Marc-Andre Fleury in rebuffing Ottawa in the first round, but it was his regular-season heroics when Fleury went down with an ankle injury -- Conklin went 18-8-5 with a 2.51 goals-against average and .923 save percentage -- that buoyed the club.

Also into the second round is Colorado Avalanche winger Scott Parker of Eagle River. He didn't play in an opening-round series win over Minnesota -- he's an enforcer, and there's less need for those come the playoffs. Plus, he missed the last 11 games of the regular season with an ankle injury. But he told the Denver Post he's been cleared to play, so he'll wait his turn and be ready if needed with the Avs open their second-round series against Detroit on Thursday.
