The Pebble Blog

The gigantic Pebble copper and gold prospect in Southwest Alaska is one of the touchiest topics in Alaska today.

In this blog, I'll track news that is significant or interesting about the Pebble project. I'll also try to generate discussion and information sharing about some of the claims and counterclaims about the project, and mining in general.

Please keep your comments courteous and on topic. If you violate the ADN comment policy, your posts will be deleted.

About Elizabeth Bluemink ebluemink@adn.com

I've been writing about mining in Alaska since 2004 and without a doubt, it is one of the most interesting topics that I cover at the Daily News. I've been a newspaper reporter for the past 10 years. In the Deep South, I specialized in reporting about environmental conflicts and pollution cleanups. For two years, I covered commercial fishing, mining and logging in Southeast Alaska. In my current job as a Daily News business reporter, I write about mining, tourism, Native corporations and other businesses.

Update from Bristol Bay/Pebble filmmakers...

Travis Rummel and Ben Knight recently sent out this e-mail on the progress of their Trout Unlimited-supported film, which I wrote about last year in this story.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,

Ben and Travis here from Felt Soul Media.

We just wanted to announce a couple things if you have a moment to spare, if not, surely your e-mail has a handy delete button.

Red Gold, our first feature length documentary film will premiere at the Telluride Mountainfilm festival over Memorial Day weekend in May. We've been working on it for over a year now and we're both proud parents of a film that we hope will provide better awareness of the Pebble Mine/Bristol Bay subject. Our inspiration to make films was born at Mountainfilm and we promise it'll be worth the journey if you can make it.

We hope to have Red Gold on DVD in late June, available at www.feltsoulmedia.com and plan to have a limited edition Blu-Ray DVD later in the summer.

It is still not too late to support our film effort. We are wrapping up the credit list in the next week and we could still use any support you can contribute to the effort. All donations are tax deductible and if you donate over $500 your name will appear in the credits of Red Gold, but please hurry as we are almost all wrapped up...

We also have some new american apparel felt soul t-shirts on our website under "the merch" - please check them out. if you are curious where the design came from, ben explains on "the wire."

Best,
Travis & Ben

Another Hatchet Job Part 2

Why does the ADN continually go out of their way to support clowns like these folks who know nothing and are committed to stopping Pebble? We haven't had a meaningful thread on this blog since April 2. Comon' - lets get with it.

Here is a quote from your article quoting the so called balanced film makers:

"They promise the film will feature people for and against Pebble, although Rummel and Knight admit to their own strong reservations about building a world-class mine in the Bristol Bay region."

I am sure it will be balanced

/sarcasm mode off

Maybe you

could tell us what you know about Pebble and that area.

They are trying to balance things out in a Mining state

Salmon is what fed the miners when they came to Alaska. And mining is what really got this state moving. With the current administration leaning toward mining, I think it's appropriate to show film clips like RED GOLD. At the end of the day Mining trumps fish......

Balance things in Alaska?

You do know that about half of the state is national and state parks and can never be touch by any development?
