I honed my mixology skills at the Oak Room of the Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston. Other experience includes the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago, and the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage, where I facilitated community tasting events while bartending at the Crow's Nest. I am currently working with a team of mixologists at Simon & Seafort's. To date, I have created more than 300 new cocktails. I've lived in Anchorage since 1999.

Hidden Treasures at Platinum Jaxx!

It's always refreshing to stroll into a club or bar on a Monday or Tuesday and see what's lurking about.

The beginning of the week is always a slow time around town.

Some clubs put more inexperienced bartenders on those days to give them more experience.

Your bartender should be as helpful and knowing about his or her products and specialty drinks no matter what day of the week.

Thankfully this was the case at Platinum Jaxx.

I stopped in after work last Monday, sampled a few cocktails and chatted up a wonderful bartender by the name of Mina (Meena).

She was friendly, helpful and guided me into some cocktails I might not have tried otherwise.

I had the Jaxx Tease and it tasted just like Mina said it would, fruity and fresh. At $9.00 it's a good buy.

Don't fall too hard for this drink, you can only get two per visit.

The thing I was most impressed by was the Single Malt Scotch selections they carried.

Platinum Jaxx has always been associated with a younger crowd but I believe the Lagavulin 16yr and Oban have been poured from those half full bottles from behind the bar.

These are Whiskies the average person isn't going to partake of. They specifically appeal to a sophisticated palate.

So it seems that image has another more mature audience coming in. Most of the patrons in the night I sat comfortably at the bar were in the 35-50 range.

The Signature Martini list is filled with exotic concoctions that combine fresh ingredients.

One that Mina recommended was the French Kiss.

Though it wasn't my favorite it was very good for what is was. Ketel One Vodka, Chambord, Pineapple Juice and fresh Raspberry puree.

Mina sensed I didn't like it and whisked it away and brought me Pear-A-Jaxx, by far the best drink I've had in quite sometime. It was well balanced with Pear Cognac, house made Sweet and Sour and Pear puree.

Heaven in a glass! A definite success and I'm picky when it comes to proper proportions in a cocktail.

I found the prices to be a little high for cocktails but using fresh ingredients brings a better product and therefore unfortunatley a bigger price tag.

I can't wait to go back and try the other Signature Martini's.

I'm not a food critic but the Coconut Shrimp were out of this world and the sweet Thai Apricot Chutney was a nice pearing with the Pear-A-Jaxx.

Hats off to Mina!

She's an excellent mixologist and is adept and intune with what her guests expectations are.

Salut!
