Denali: Not just a mountain anymore

I noticed a large bumper sticker that was stuck to the back of a red Honda SUV driving in front of me while I was on my way to work this morning. A stylized line with two humps representing mountains ran between the words “Denali” and “the Alaska gas pipeline.” I thought huh, that didn’t take long.

Three days ago, BP and Conoco Phillips executives announced plans to join and invest in building a natural gas pipeline from the North Slope to Canada along the Alaska Highway. They are calling this the Denali project.

Aside from being amused by how quickly a bumper logo was dispersed, I wondered whether the two humps are meant to represent Mount Foraker and Mount McKinley beside each other, or the two peaks of Mount McKinley. I also thought about whether it is just that easy to make bumper stickers so fast, or whether using bumpers to spread the word was part of the master plan.

On second thought, this is the oil industry we are talking about here. Perhaps it wasn’t a sticker, but a nice magnet. I mean, they can afford the luxury of a magnet to protect the paint job on those gas-guzzling SUVs we love so much.

another study??????

and then tax negotiations to reduce benefits to alaskans, then negotiations on the failure to develop point thomson, then canadian native land claims and lawsuits from trans canada and enbridge.

sounds more like sleeping lady to me.

Denali will always be the Great One !

Need you suggest otherwise, Ms. Hattie?

Now what is going to be entertaining to watch, is how BP et al. will try and achieve something almost as great as the real Great One.

Think of all the missed opportunities when the Pt. Thompson plan(s) were introduced, and introduced, and introduced...

If the same folks promising a pipeline

had gotten the contract to build Denali (the real one) we can be sure they'd almost have the studies completed and construction would be just a year or two away.

Pondering the meaning of "Denali"

Go ask Diane Benson this question. She appears to have an interest in the potential significance and ramifications of the name. But to some new comers who did not live through the last life altering TAPS event, Denali will be the "big one". And like the mountain the biggest thing to dominate the state.

Surprising

how many folks really are into domination these days!
