Talk Dirt To Me

Do you love to make mud pies, grow a houseplant, eat veggies, or stop to smell the bouquet on your co-workers desk? Everyone enjoys a bit of green growing around him or her and then there are those that are passionate and needy when it comes to dabbling in the dirt. With this blog, we'll try to satisfy those needs and tell you about what's going on with the Anchorage gardening scene. You know, as I finally learned, it's all about the dirt.

Photographer and gardener Fran Durner (fdurner@adn.com) writes the blog.

Congratulations to Lori and Troy Zaumseil, our feerless Weed Warrior leaders, who send this update:

"HB330, passed the Senate by a unanimous vote!! (On Friday, April 4.) This is amazing, it passed through two branches of the Legislature without a single nay vote!! Over 550 bills were introduced at this session!! It is so gratifying to see our leaders demonstrate this kind of vision and foresight to protect the three E's - Alaska's Economy, Ecology and Environment!!"

Click here for our recent blogpost on the subject.

And click here for a recap of the Zaumseil's efforts in Washington D.C.

The bill now awaits signing by Governor Palin.

A fiscal note attached to it addresses funding for three years, which, if signed into law by the Governor, would take affect on July 1st of this year: "One new position, a Research Analyst II (range 16) will be established to serve as the statewide coordinator for noxious weeds as identified in the bill. This will be a state employee performing the duties as prescribed by the board, including providing information to the public on topics of weed and pest control, doing limited applied research on weed and pest control and representing the Division of Agriculture/ DNR in the area of invasive species issues. This legislation sunsets on June 30, 2011."

Let's keep the momentum going....
