WARHOL COMING? Mayor's Arts Awards

By MIKE DUNHAM

A celebration honoring the recipients of the 2008 Mayor's Awards for the Arts took place on Wednesday at the Anchorage Museum. All the best folk were on hand for what Mayor Mark Begich himself called the biggest turnout for one of these things that he had yet seen. Members of arts organizations' boards, prominent Alaska artists, foundation personnel, long-time arts boosters.

Among the speakers, Museum director Jim Pepper-Henry let slip that he and his staff are working to bring an exhibition of works by Andy Warhol up shortly after the completion of the expansion, currently underway but expected to be ready for the public by 2010.

This year's winners, who all received a painting by Carol Crump Bryner, are:

Fran Reed - Outstanding Individual Artist
Karilagan Folkloric Group - Outstanding Arts Organization
Wild Salmon on Parade - Champion of the Arts
Alaska Theatre of Youth - Youth Arts Award
Mable Gibbons - Kay Linton Volunteer in the Arts
Keith Appel - Lorene Harrison Award.

The Karilagan group, a Philippino ensemble whose performances include some spectacular traditional costumes, performed for the event.

Not yet.

But we have, in several places, encouraged anyone who attended to send us their thoughts on the performance either as a comment in the "First Friday Rambles" on this blog or as a "you be the critic" letter e-mailed to arts@adn.com.

If you made it, let us know your opinion. Thanks!
